Guerrero, Porter and Lane Score Stoppages
Andrew Fruman recaps last night's Shobox card.
Shobox capped off its 2009 schedule Friday night with a triple-header, featuring impressive performances by a trio of sharp looking prospects.
In the main-event and most competitive bout of the show, middleweight Fernando Guerrero continued his steady ascent up the ranks with a 4th round stoppage of a very game Jessie Nicklow.
After pushing the pace of the contest through the opening 3 rounds with a steady two handed attack that included some punishing body work, Guerrero took complete command early in the 4th.
A hard right hook from the 23 year old that sent Nicklow falling sideways into the ropes did the initial damage. Using the ropes for support, Nicklow pulled himself up almost immediately from the canvas and bravely fought back, but was no match for Guerrero’s heavy combinations, and was on unsteady legs when referee Mark Nelson jumped in to end it at the 2:09 mark.
In the co-featured bout, a leaping left hook from the explosive Shawn Porter sent Jamar Patterson crashing to the canvas flat on his back mid-way through the 4th round. After the gutsy Patterson somehow managed to get to his feet by the count of 5, Porter was on him right away, and a quick combination, followed by a couple left hooks, prompted referee Celestino Ruiz to wisely stop the bout. The time was 1:51 of round 4.
It was a dominant performance from the speedy Porter, as he landed hard combinations from start to finish on his overmatched opponent. It was a testament to Patterson’s toughness that the bout lasted as long as it did.
In the show’s opening bout that featured a couple of unbeaten prospects, Lanard Lane stopped Said El Harrack with a 2nd round TKO.
After a relatively cautious start that saw him circling from the outside firing his jab, Lane opened up mid-way through the first round with some heavy right hands – scoring two knockdowns before the round was over.
Lane continued to find the mark with the right hand, as well as some solid left hooks in the following frame, although El Harrack appeared to be completely clear headed when referee Mark Nelson jumped in and ended the bout at the 1:38 mark.
El Harrack looked to be in worse shape after the knockdowns in the first round, and was none too happy with Nelson’s decision. While the stoppage did look premature, Lane wasn't missing with his right hand and the ending appeared to be inevitable.
