Needles, Testing and Manny – Oh My!
By Ron Pegram – The Casual Fan
In the following post, don’t expect historical analysis, rigorous research or anything else other than the ‘off the cuff’ opinions of a guy who has watched boxing his entire life. If you asked me the same questions a week from now, I might answer you differently but this is my take on the situation today.
In 1990, a reasonably taut and decidedly tongue-in –cheek flick named Arachnophobia crawled its way to a $50M domestic gross. Taking advantage of a commonplace phobia (that of spiders) and John Goodman’s star status at the time, the movie did better than expected at the box office. Manny Pacquiao is set to blow that away in the sequel, however, as his own version – Belonephobia - will open to at least $30M not to mention the subsequent PPV proceeds or other revenue streams to be generated from a fight of this stature.
Ok, so obviously I’m being a bit of an ass here with that opening. Yet, I can’t help but smirk at the notion that a guy willing to fight through a busted eardrum and who is tattooed is willing to throw away a $30M fight over the testing requirements demanded by Floyd Mayweather. ‘Money’ Mayweather, based on recent PPV receipts, has a claim to being the top draw in the sport. The other guy capable of making such a claim would be Manny Pacquiao (of course). So how come these two can’t get it together?
Well, it’s simple – if you believe the hype. Mayweather believes that Pacquiao’s ascension through the weight classes of boxing may be aided by some pharmaceutical magic. As a result, he wants Manny to agree to random testing. Manny’s people are crying foul because they say (among other things) that Floyd shouldn’t be able to dictate the rules of a sport.
Huh? What?
First of all, when did boxing become a sport? Boxing is nothing but a series of events. Big fights are basically concerts. True sports have organized schedules. If you want to know when your hometown team is playing their rivals, you look up their schedule. What you don’t do is log onto the Internet every few hours to see if the Los Angeles Lakers have agreed to play the Boston Celtics under the following conditions.
Yeah, that is a buzz kill to fans of the ‘sport’ including me. But it is what it is and the irony of it is that the fans have made this possible. It’ll all be sorted out in a few years, however, because every UFC PPV is being shown at various bars around the country, making thousands of new fans with every event. As a result, that sport is capable of putting together successful monthly PPV events. Boxing is back-page news. And it’ll only get worse because it’s a niche sport appealing ever more to an insular group of fans. But whatever, that’s another article…I believe boxing will get its act together.
Pacquiao knows full well the game that’s being played. He used his own star power recently to demand that Miguel Cotto, a world class 147 lb fighter, come in at 145 lbs with his 147 lb belt on the line. Amazing how the sport changed its rules for Manny. The 147 lb belt was contested at 1445lbs. Wouldn’t this be analogous to the Lakers saying ‘Yeah, we’ll play the Celtics during the regular season but we want their 2008 NBA championship record to be on the line…”
“Uh guys, you can’t play for that in 2010 because that’s the 2008 championship…”
So go ahead, switch ‘in 2010’ for ‘at 145 lbs’ and ‘2008’ for ‘147 lbs’. Boxing’s rules depend on whom you’re asking. And Manny knows this.
So that brings us to the fundamental question. Is Floyd just messing with Manny’s head or does he have reason to be suspicious?
I think Floyd does have a reason to be suspicious. And having reason to be suspicious is just that. It’s a hunch. Manny could absolutely be innocent. I’m not saying he isn’t. But here’s a layman’s justification for Floyd’s suspicion.
Manny is doing something very odd from a historical context. In fact, I had a conversation with a GREAT boxing fan just last night on this very issue. He brought up historical precedence of smaller fighters moving up in weight to be successful in the way that Manny has from 112 lbs to 147 lbs. You hear of names like Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Robinson. Hell, even Evander Holyfield moved from 190 to being a bone-crunching 220 lb warrior.
But very few guys have moved up to the extent that Manny has with a physique like his AND better KO power at the higher weights and those that have (and Roy Jones, Jr. and Evander Holyfield come to mind in terms of the physiques) have been under suspicion during their careers as well.
You want to get historical with me. Fine, look up those videos of Sugar Ray Robinson and Roberto Duran at middleweight! Take at look at their builds. Did either look like a super-hero? Roberto Duran’s physique at 160 lbs was positively ‘Dad-like’. Somehow Manny has added muscle, kept off fat and done so in a time practically unheard of. His team says it’s the result of world class nutrition.
In fact, his nutritionist has been quoted as saying they feed Manny so much protein that they have added various supplements to protect and preserve the functions of his kidneys and liver.
I love it – Manny’s eating so much protein that his team is worried about his kidneys and liver. Wonder how they’re testing his liver function? I’m no scientist but my guess is that they’re drawing a little blood here and there to do that.
I have no idea if Manny is guilty. I hope he isn’t. He has an easy way to make sure this fight comes off, however. Admit that Floyd, like him, has star power, acquiesce to the demands and let’s get this thing going. Don’t sell me hype that Manny’s pride is at stake (he wasn’t too proud to demand the 147 lb belt be fought at 145 lbs). Don’t give me a line about how he’s nervous about needles when he has tattoos and a nutritionist on record as saying they monitor his kidney and liver functions.
Accept the testing, clear your name, and prove your greatness.
And make a similar ‘star-power’ demand. If I were Manny, I’d make Floyd come to the ring to the music from my most recent CD. If Floyd trying to bounce to the ring to Manny’s singing doesn’t throw off his rhythm in the early rounds, nothing will.

a few points...
all these unfounded allegations are getting out of hand and it’s hurting pacquiao’s name. pacquiao has submitted to all the tests required of him in the past and passed them all with flying colors.
the only reason why it came up now because Mayweather Sr., a person with zero credibilty, convicted drug dealer, and a person who is biased against a fighter who showed the world what an incompetent trainer he is, THINKS that pac is on something. and what is he basing it on? pac’s ability to beat opponents perceived to be bigger than him?
you said "Somehow Manny has added muscle, kept off fat and done so in a time practically unheard of. "
is it really unheard of? if you check the chart in the link below, you would see that his weight at fight night didnt really change much from 2006 to present. it was just his weigh-in weight that increased. now is it possible that he was just stronger because he did not have to kill himself to make weight? did he really pack that much of muscle mass from 2006 till now?
link to the chart: http://www.sportingnews.com/blog/The_Rumble/entry/view/48832/is_pacquiao_impossible?_why_steroid_accusations_are_baseless
pacquiao did not personally say that he is afraid of needles. if you check the pac-hatton 24-7, it shows him taking a blood test. they have gone on record that if the NSAC requires random blood tests, they will take it. they will take it because the sanctioning body asked them to take it, and not Junior’s former crack dealing father thinks pac is on drugs.
the pac camp is okay with blood testing, as long as it’s not too close to fight night.they are ok with unlimited urine tests. use google and you will find articles saying that urine tests are still the best way to look for PEDs, that despite claims that a lot of athletes use HGHs, NO ONE HAS BEEN CAUGHT USING THAT YET FROM A BLOOD TEST. (sorry, too lazy to look for the links there, looking for the link above too a lot of my time). they just dont want to be harrassed too much and they believe that the NSAC will look out for the fighter’s welfare. they are working with the NSAC to include random blood testing during training, but not just the days leading to the fight. AND UNLIMITED URINE TESTS. AND they are willing to have blood taken out right after the fight. tell me that’s not reasonable.will the drugs/HGH magically disappear because the boxing match is over?what’s the difference in taking the blood test right before or after the fight?
also, you would probably want to read the article below too. Richard Schaefer and Golden Boy Promotions (representing Mayweather)has, only in 2008, balked at Mosley taking blood tests, crying that they will only go with the tests that the NSAC mandates. why the change of heart now? a little too shady dont you think?

Agreed...
I’m in agreement with all of your points. Pacquiao’s team have agreed to random tests, including random blood tests… and if a deal cannot be worked out, in my opinion it will be Mayweather’s fault. His side is the one making demands, and they are the ones not willing to settle for a fair compromise.
The problem is public perception, and right now, this is turning into a public relations disaster for the sport. If Manny and Floyd can’t work this out – fairly or not, there will be many people that will hold Manny responsible. There are plenty of fans that aren’t looking at this in terms of how dare Floyd dictate the rules, but rather saying why won’t Manny agree?. In principle, Pacquiao should tell Mayweather’s team to get lost, but unfortunately if he doesn’t comply with exactly what Mayweather has asked, in the eyes of the public, he risks looking like he has something to hide. It’s a tough situation, and the way Golden Boy has brought it about is quite distasteful… but that’s boxing.
Court time
That’s why I’m happy that manny is taking this to the court of Law. This will expose all the hipocrisy of the GBP and the baseless accusation craps that the Mayweather camp is bringing up. I really don’t think Mayweather wants to fight; and manny knows this. And since he won’t be able to avenge his reputation in the ring, he’s gonna clear his name in the court. Then he will get his millions that way.
when all is said and done, boxing is really the one taking a hit, as pac is the standard bearer for the sport. hopefully, they will resolve this impasse. dan rafael reports that the pac camp is again willing to compromise. and i believe they are being reasonable.

Very entertaining read, Ron.
This stuff is getting a little too crazy for me. I agree that people are making way too much out of every little detail that is made available. We all knew this was not going to be an easy fight to put together. It’ll happen. Just wish they would have negotiated behind closed doors.
Advertently or inadvetently, you are misleading your readers, Ron
Ron, for you and your other reader’s benefit, consider the unadulterated facts first, and visit the website below:>
I am not sure if this is just a case of very shallow journalism on your part Ron, or you have been a recipient of the GBP/Mayweather camp’s “Destroy Pacquiao Warchest” that they have pooled together, in order to:
1) discredit the hard work and accomplishments of Manny in the eyes of the public, as he is currently being the torch bearer of boxing, and has just been crowned the Fighter of the Decade, as well as Fighter of the Year, most recently,
2) play (with malicious intent), the mind games with Pacquiao, that they will need to gain the usual unfair advantage, Mayweather is so used to getting in his fights (remember how he cheated an undersized, underdog Marquez, a few months back?).
Ron, look at the history of these two fighters, before you start casting doubts on the honest, hardworking and humble pound-for-pound champion of the world. See who has been a a cheater, braggart, low-life and outright liar, and who has had his credibility intact all throughout his career, with only the kindest words for people around him and a work ethic second to none.
Look at the facts first before you further fuel the malicious lies and misdirections propagated by the Mayweather camp!
For the record, the accomplishments of Pacquiao did not warrant the doubts and aspersions of the media and the fans, when they were being achieved by Henry Armstrong and Sugar Ray Robinson, who were also destroying bigger opponents, north of their weight division. Is it because they were black, and Manny is mere small man from Asia?
Cmon, guys…be fair and objective, and most of all, eliminate and tinge of racism from your hearts. Asians can also be as successful as any black or white dude, who works hard and has a strongly grounded faith on the deeper purpose of his life and career!
That is what makes Manny, a cut above the rest and truly the “Greatest” of this generation.
You are so accustomed to cheaters in your country that anybody who does better than your countrymen is outrightly accused of cheating.
Truly sad for a nation that purports to be the land of the free and home of the brave…where the American dream is supposed to be the reward for hardwork and personal sacrifice!
Mr. Pegram
Ron, good to see you writing for this fine site. You’re a talented writer and a handsome man.
Thanks for all the comments
Hey folks,
Let me just add a few thoughts on this blog and those to come. I’m a casual fan – not a reporter. So to the criticism that perhaps my piece was not researched in depth…you’re absolutely right. My intent with this blog is to give you the equivalent of an opinion piece. If it turns out I’m wrong, – and hell, I may admit I’m wrong in the days to come – there will be no shame on my part AND no hesitation to admit it. My goal is to entertain first and give you something to think about 2nd. I won’t write anything just for shock value though. What you’re getting is my honest ‘gut reaction’.
Also, to the comments that perhaps I’m motivated by some pro-American fervor against Manny, nothing could be further from the truth. I enjoy the guy. He’s amazing to watch and, like I wrote, I’d like nothing better than for him to be vindicated.
However, I am concerned that he’s allowing an asterisk to be placed on his accomplishments, fair or not.
Did he need Cotto to come down to 144 lbs? Probably not, based on the fight.
Does he need to add stipulations to this testing demand? Probably not if he’s telling the truth. So why not do it if he’s clean and let’s get the biggest fight of the last ten years moving.
Let’s say he’s clean. Let’s say it’s really a combination of pride and superstition that keeps him from fighting PBF under the testing regimen. Is that not a HUGE buzz-kill?
Is it Manny’s fault entirely? Not necessarily but he’s in the driver’s seat. AND he has established a precedent for using his own star power to make demands. Goose meet gander.
I want nothing more than to see Manny/Floyd and I’d love a Manny win. I do think he’s incredible. But he’s either dirty or he’s letting himself be hustled in the court of public opinion. As a fan, and I am a fan, that’s disappointing.
Again, thanks for all the comments. Don’t give up on me as a Manny hater. If the fight goes off, you’ll see me write an in-depth analysis of how I think Manny could win.
