Paul Williams vs Sergio Martinez Predictions

Paul Williams takes on Sergio Martinez in the main-event of HBO's double-header tonight. The fighters weighed in yesterday, with Martinez coming in at 159 and Williams a couple pounds lighter at 157.

Predictions after the jump...

Star-divide

Michael Nelson

(Williams)

Martinez is a crafty, game character, but he's a bit too one dimensional offensively for me to pick him against Williams.  Paul will start timing him midway through the bout and walk away with a comfortable decision.

Dave Oakes

(Williams)

I think that Martinez will be a tricky opponent for Williams; Martinez is superb at knowing when to take a half step back before countering, he's hard to pin down and has fast hands. I can see Williams starting fast but being picked off by an elusive Martinez.

I believe the first six rounds will be close and hard to score but the fight will swing in Williams’ favour as Martinez tires in the later rounds. I fancy Williams to win on the cards around the 116-112.

Jeff Pryor

(Williams)

I think Dave's take is a pretty likely scenario. I still find it hard to shake the image of Quintana befuddling Williams for twelve rounds, in their first bout. I think Martinez is capable of a performance like that and I like his chances at the upset. However, I think Williams will send up a barrage that eventually overwhelms Martinez to the point of defeat. Tough fight for both, but Williams gets a relatively close decision.

Lee Payton

(Williams)

I'm taking Williams, and I think he'll eventually wear Martinez down for a late stoppage.  Paul by TKO in 11.

Andrew Fruman

(Williams)

I think Martinez can cause Williams some problems, but I agree with Michael that he doesn't have enough offensive variety to pull the upset.  Williams by 8-4 type scores.

Mark Lyons

(Williams)

Williams will pull away down the stretch to take a 7-5 or 8-4 decision.

Scott Christ of Bad Left Hook

(Williams)

Martinez, in theory, provides a much trickier challenge than Williams was going to get from Kelly Pavlik on this date. But as good a cutie as Martinez is in the ring, I think he -- not Williams -- is the one who gets the "bad matchup" tag in this fight. "The Punisher" throws punches not in bunches, but in metric tons. Martinez loves to drop his hands and stay at distance, but with Williams' freakish reach and that volume of activity, Sergio is in for a long, long night. Williams by wide decision.

Check out Bad Left Hook tonight for live round by round updates of Martinez vs Williams.

Carlos Acevedo of The Cruelest Sport

(Williams)

Sergio Martinez has the style to frustrate Paul Williams, but questions remain as to whether Martinez can be as effective as a middleweight as he is at junior middleweight. It seems likely that Williams will be able to take control little by little with his high workrate and his long jab. Williams by decision.
