Manny Pacquiao Moves On...and Into a Wall!

Photos © Marty Rosengarten / Ringsidephotos.com / Joshua Clottey appears to be next up for Manny Pacquiao.

By Ron Pegram – The Casual Fan

In the following post, don’t expect historical analysis, rigorous research or anything else other than the ‘off the cuff’ opinions of a guy who has watched boxing his entire life. If you ask me the same questions a week from now, I might answer you differently but this is my take on the situation today

Alright, I’m done with the steroid debate. It is what it is. Let’s talk about something a little more exciting – in moving on to fight Joshua Clottey, Manny Pacquiao may be taking on the biggest challenge of his career.

Don’t dismiss this fight because Clottey recently lost to Miguel Cotto, who has since been positively thumped by Manny Pacquiao. That’s ‘Amateur Night’ boxing analysis. This fight, if it comes off, will be more about willpower and the mastery of space within a boxing ring than who beat whom.

Manny Pacquiao is a master of the come-forward style. There are moments in his fights in which you realize the other opponent simply cannot resist him. Watch his first rematch with Erik Morales for an example of this. The early going was surprisingly competitive, but by the mid rounds, it was apparent that Morales could not hold Pacquiao off.

Despite a climb of several weight classes, the result was no different when Manny fought Miguel Cotto. Simply put, if you back up against Manny Pacquiao, you’re essentially shark bait in the ring.

Star-divide

But to back up Joshua Clottey consistently? From a head that looks like it should have an Easter Island logo to a high guard right out of the Winky Wright playbook, Clottey is a fortress.

Can Manny hurt this guy? I’m not sure he can even get to him.

Yes, Manny is much faster. But Clottey has that high guard and agonizingly economical approach to punching. There may not be counter opportunities for Manny.

And yes, Manny is surprisingly strong at 147 lbs but Clottey come into fights weighing almost 160 lbs - and he does so looking fit and strong.

Manny builds on momentum. He’s a flood in the ring. Even if you resist his early surge, he keeps coming. The waters keep rising. Eventually, he drowns you.

But Clottey is resolute, if not active in the ring. His biggest weakness is his tendency to take his foot off the gas at times but that’s a flaw when you’re expecting a fighter to pursue his opponent. Against Manny, Joshua will always be within reach because Manny doesn’t run. Sure, Manny is awesome at darting in and out but doing that against a counter-puncher like Clottey who also has a good jab and tight defense isn’t exactly a home run strategy.

If Manny can break Joshua, I’ll be more impressed than I was by him breaking down Cotto. Clottey may not have the accomplishments of a Miguel Cotto but he has a more difficult style for Manny to solve, and, in boxing, that’s what matters.

My take on this one – Manny may stun Clottey early but by mid rounds, you’ll see Clottey stalking and Manny using all of his skills at the ‘in and out’ style to try to win a decision. What you will not see is Manny stopping Clottey before the final bell.

In fact, I think this could resemble the Miguel Cotto/Antonio Margarito fight. Manny will be the sharper guy but Clottey will be the hard to hurt, much bigger guy. Manny’s sharper than Cotto, however, and Clottey’s not as active as Margarito so Manny should win.

But it’s no sure thing. When you run into a wall at full speed, the wall usually wins.

Into a wall???

Wow you reckon Manny hits the wall by opting to fight Clottey instead? … firstly, it’s nice to know that you’ve also moved on and discuss this new fight. Team Pacquiao is also aware that this fight is a high-risk fight with low-reward (money wise) … but this is Pacquiao that we are talking about, he’s a fighter and if he losses to Clottey then Clottey deserves it and we will take our hat off to him … my question to this writer is will you see Pacquiao as a great fighter for getting into the ring with tough opponents or you’ll just bash him and say Pacquiao is overrated? – give credit where credit is due mate!!!… Now you’re aware that boxing fans are not stupid even if the media try to downplay Pacquiao – boxing fans see the real color of fighters inside & outside ring. Yes not only in the ring for being a great pugilist but also someone who is returning something back to his society. My take on this Pacquiao/Clottey fight … well definitely this is much interesting than fighting Mayweather, who now we think is a cheat for using a banned substance for his brittle hands. Clottey has a good counter punching skills with very good defensive stance. I agree with you in some points (of course) but Pacquiao is on a different level now compared to 2 or 3 years back. Pacquiao will overwhelm Clottey with punches in all angles with brute force, Clottey’s great wall even if it is a Trojan wall will be breached by Pacquiao … didn’t you hear it from Roach that Pacquiao is a virus.

Trojan wall?

I think you may mean trojan horse…

I also think you may have missed the point of the article somewhat. The writer says that Manny should win, but it will be very hard, and you appear to have interpreted this as Pacquiao hate for some reason.

Manny is the Trojan horse

… the title of this article is “Manny Pacquiao Moves On…and Into a Wall!” … City of Troy had a great wall but also got burnt down to the ground … and I did mention that this is a high-risk fight for Pacquiao and I will give give all praises and respect to Clottey if he will win … but in my own opinion – i doubt that.

by Kvin on Jan 9, 2010 9:08 PM EST up reply actions

Manny should win

And yes the writer did say that, but the premise that he used for his title is already insinuating that Pacquiao made a mistake of going against Clottey … but it is true that Pacquiao may be taking on the biggest challenge of his career … but in the end – Manny should win.

by Kvin on Jan 9, 2010 9:25 PM EST up reply actions

I huess what Kvin meant was the Wall of Troy, which was very difficult to breach.

That’s why they brought in the Trojan Horse, to breach the walls from within.

My favorite line: Alright, I’m done with the steroid debate.

Making this fight would be one of Arum’s strangest decisions. Why would he put the most exciting fighter in the sport against a granite statue? Clottey may not win the fight on the official cards, but he’s sure to make it a punshing night against anyone. Not exactly the type of match-up a promoter makes if he’s interested in preserving his pug’s prime.

Manny Pacquiao has the legs of a horse. That thick, intimidating base has had as much to do with this sucess as deadly speed. It is my opinion that the PacMan will have to use them to host a ballet, when compared to his usual blitzkrieg. He might as well come out to the ring in a No Fear tutu because running at Joshua Clottey is the absolute worst plan imaginable.

Slightly out of character, but certainly not impossible. Out, turn, combo, in, turn, combo, out…

Think, a safer version of what he did to Cotto. The fact that Pac is not likely to hurt anyone in there for the first time in his career should keep the animal within himself at bay.

I still have a feeling that this is mostly ego stuff going on. It’s possible that Arum is just using Clottey to keep some fans on his side of the mess that the Mayweather negotiations have become.

As a fight fan, Pac-Clottey could be greatness. I’m just worried about Bob’s mental health.

Good analysis

Ron,

I agree with your thinking on this one. This will be a tougher fight for Manny by far than Cotto was. If Manny KO’s Clottey, he might as well move up to light heavyweight.

As an aside, it will be disgraceful if Manny takes this fight and I hope all boxing fans skip this PPV.

"it will be disgraceful if Manny takes this fight and I hope all boxing fans skip this PPV"

Not nearly the disgrace that will be Floyd-Malignaggi.

Hopefully this just forces someone to take their beating from Sugar Shane Mosley. I don't see it as a disgrace at all

Fighting 2 top 5 welterweights, top 3 even, in a year is damn impressive for someone from such a low weight division. Also Clottey is a commonly avoided fighter who poses big difficulties for Pacquiao. If Pacquiao he wins this he’s practically achieved more than Mayweather at 147 already!

I get that you’re disappointed that the Mayweather fight fell through (for now) but this is still a very good matchup.

It’s just a bit of a letdown from a Mayweather fight, but I agree it’s a real good match-up. If Floyd had never returned, I think we’d all be very pleased about this fight.

"disagraceful"

Let me clarify…

Had Manny never backed down from fighting Money, and that fight never been close to a reality, I would applaud Manny for taking this fight.

And, Prod, I agree that Money-Paulie would be a farce. I only hope Money-Mosley happens. It’s my dream fight.

Pacman will break that wall

I am not really saddened that the Mega-Fight did not go throught. I did not mind the replacement at all. He is a Floyd look-a-like version, the only difference is that this guy wanted to fight while Floyd has to ask the approval of his dad. I expect tons of action between this two fighters. And who knows this may end up breaking the record match-up to the Mega-Fight. The popularity of Pacman fueled by the anticipated match-up of the century, location- Dallas cowboy stadium, also the under card such as Margarito’s return and the sickening Floyd Mayweather’s blood test nonsense… What else can you ask.?

Clottey is a very different fighter for Mayweather

in terms of stance, defensive practise, speed and tactics. Other than that they both use defence a lot they are really rather different.

When you run into a wall at full speed, the wall usually wins.

But Pacquiao doesn’t run, he bulldozes his way at full speed and bulldozers usually tore down the wall. I totally dis-agree that Clotey is a Wall of defense. And if Cotto cannot hurt Clotey and barely won that match. It will be a different story with Pacquaio who many has said and believed that Dela Hoya, Hatton and Cotto are too big for the little guy but look what happened, he beat them into submission sending the two in retirement and one in deep thoughts about his career. You certainly didn’t learn from your boxing history and here goes again a writer casting doubts to the greatness of the fighter who fought for god and country and after the smoke has clear out, I will be the first one to find and read your after-fight article about what you wrote about the wall.

Quote form article

Manny should win.

Casting doubts is fine as this is a very tough matchup.
