Why Are American Boxing Fans Mad At David Haye?
Hop onto any of the many boxing forums on the internet and you'll notice that the American public is not very happy with Britain's top big man David Haye for a host of reasons, many of which have little to do with what he does once he's in the ring. Now, I wouldn't consider myself a fan of Haye (it's nice to have a heavyweight around with some talent and style for a change though), but here's my best shot at defending the decisions made by the fighter and his team since he arrived in the heavyweight division.
The big problem seems to be that he called out the Klitschko brothers and the fights still haven't happened. Fair enough.
All the back and forth in the press is certainly annoying, and it would be nice if the best fought the best every time out, but this is boxing, and, generally speaking, the bigger the fight, the longer it takes to put together. Remember how long it took to make Lewis-Holyfield and Lewis-Tyson? No one needs to be reminded of the current situation with Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather.
The two sides are squabbling over how to split the revenues generated by two separate television markets. That much we know. If you are willing to believe managers, publicists and anyone else in either camp, then you've got a thing or two to learn about the business side of the sport. Anything that makes its way through the media is designed to make one guy look good and the other guy look bad. The truth is irrelevant. What's important is what you can get people to believe. And boxing fans are quick with a "AHA! See, I told you! That pussy (a professional boxing world champion) is scared!"
Then there was a T-shirt, worn by Haye, with a picture of him holding the head of a Klitschko like a hero. The reaction to that was just comical. Guys...chill out. It's cotton and polyester.
Boxing isn't the schoolyard. You can talk all the smack you want, and you don't have to meet the other guy at recess to back up your words. All Haye has to do is make people care about him and add fuel to the hype machine. Mission accomplished.
Around about that time, Haye put his name on contracts to fight the two-headed Heavyweight Champion, but decided to back out of both deals for different reasons. The first time because his financial backer went broke, so he would have been fighting for free. Astonishingly, that excuse isn't good enough for the most hardcore of haters around the net. The second, he and his team got a real good look at one of the most hideous contracts in this sport since James J Braddock snookered Joe Louis.
In the end, Haye's team decided to pick up the extra strap (WBA) held by Nicolay Valuev and, so far anyway, things have worked out for them. The proof of which is the fact that they are stuck on a 50-50 split in Klitschko negotiations, which is significantly better than where they were last year. The title belt gave them leverage in the second (or is it the third) round of negotiations, and if things fall apart, Haye can pack a house in Great Britain against just about anyone.
I find it hard to come down on a guy for making sound business decisions in a sport where the time to maximize your earning potential is so short.
The criticisms don't stop there though. There are those who insist David Haye is a boring fighter.
The best part is that many of these same people are quick to come to the defense of Wlad when fans point out the fact that while he is loaded with power and often gets his man in the end, he's also horribly dull and frustrating to watch most of the time.
Apparently these people missed Haye's exciting run as Cruiserweight Champion.
There was one recent bore of a fight that they'll cling to though. Against Valuev, Haye did more circling than punching, but look at the size disadvantage he was up against. And if someone is willing to give the Klitschkos a pass for their many unwatchable fights, surely a reasonable person could let that one slide. He did win the fight and even had the giant wobbling in the final round. Who else has even made Valuev blink?
Now fight fans are sore that Haye is fighting Audley Harrison. We all know it won't be competitive, and it is a waste of time, but I just described most Klitschko fights, didn't I? Vitali just fought Shannon Briggs and Wlad is set to face the inexperienced Derek Chisora. Enough said.
I think it's clear sign that both sides want the fight, they just want to make sure to get every last dime out of it. Chisora and Harrison were chosen to promote Klitschko vs Haye. The fight is worth way more now because of all the nonsense many fans can't stand, and that's a fact.
Look, I wish they would both just shut up and get it on, but I also know boxing is a business. Besides, if you get over the fact that you wanted it yesterday and you still haven't got it, you may notice that the two sides seem to be heading for a clash sometime next year. There is too much money on the table for this fight not to happen, and when that is the case, it usually does.
I just hope boxing fans will care half as much about the actual fight as they did the negotiations.

David ducker Haye
Hey Lee just to refresh your memory David haye pulled out of the 1st fight with a back injury and yes around the same time sports network Setanta who were backing Haye went bust but that wouldnt have meant Haye would have fought for free certainly not and besides the point Haye was ranting so much at the time to everbody that he’d KO both Klitschkos and he just wanted to unify the division.
Lets talk about the contracts he accepted the 1st contract against Wladimir no problem then pulled out with the back injury, a few months later a fight with Vitali was scheduled and the exact same contract was offered and then he claimed it was unacceptable so choose to fight the bum Valuev a fight in which he didnt win in many eyes.
The 3rd contract by Klitschko offered a 50-50 split soon after the Ruiz fight and Wlads utube call out. It was 50-50 down the middle which included splitting the RTL german network money, splitting the Sky money and also the US money, but Haye wanted all the sky money and he wanted Wlad to have all the RTL money which wouldnt be 50-50 as Sky would receive far more money(even Haye admiited this), so who’s the greedy one? Also keeping in mind Wlad is the the no.1 rated heavyweight who’s belts have far more clout than Hayes WBA belt which is the lowest ranked FACT and there was no rematch clause either in the last contract offer.
So I think Americans are very justified in their dislike of Haye they know a ducker when they see one and now in Britain finally fans are starting to see through him, all uk blogs are full of criticisms about his clear avoidance of the K bros and by the way I dont think he is a boring fighter his style is modeled on Roy jones jnr not as exciting but not all that boring either.
Thanks for commenting.
I’m almost as annoyed as you about this whole situations, and David deserves his share of criticism without a doubt. just some of it is unreasonable. I don’t think he should have ever accepted the first contracts offered to him. Are you familiar with the details, cuz if you are, you’ll admit that they were truly horrific. No idea what he was thinking there.
I guess I just don’t get as upset as most when it comes to all the mouthing off.
“He said he would knock them out! He wore those mean T-shirts! Oh, the humanity!!!”
So what? He got the attention he wanted and now he’ll make muuuuch more when they do make the fight. And they will.
But yeah, I prefer guys who do more fighting than talking. However, those guys tend not to be as sharp as Haye and usually don’t make the money he’s making. And that’s the bottom line in boxing.

His “gang rape” comment was crude and immature and showed his lack of class and intelligence.
The idiot has kids looking up to him and should think more before opening his mouth.
I’m a Brit and used to be a fan (and still do appreciate his skills) but as far as i am concerned he’s a phony who is trying to play the fans and is only interested in money.
He knows that if he takes either Klit now he likely gets KO’d and it’s the end of his career.
Thats why he’s prolonging it.Him and Alan Booth have become experts at talking and avoiding real challenges.
I know i’ll be streaming his fight in the slim hope that Audley KO’s him.
I certainly won’t be paying for that novelty fight.
'And they will.'
you say that with such certainty, but I personally cannot see him ever getting the terms he wants (and knows that he will not get, frankly). You also said that there’s too much money on the table for the fight not to happen, but you also referenced Pacquiao-Mayweather near the start ;)
I personally think he wants no part of the brothers. Both of them would be heavy favorites against him. He knows that, but all the talk and the 50-50 tactics helps him to save face, really.
I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘’Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.'’ (Bernard Hopkins)

alan booth creassseddd !!!! adam booth numb nuts get your facts and information straight before you make retarded comments yank !!!!!
Haye is totally ignorant and is a prime example of somebody who thinks he’s more intelligent than he is, Matt ur coment was spot on, the fact that steve ellison could only jump on the little mistake of alan or adam booths 1st name just goes to show he has the brain capacity of a hamster.
At the end of the day Haye knows he cant last against a Klitschko. He won a very disputed fight against Valuev who was one of the worst heavyweights of all time, the K bros are in a different league, they use their size advantages to complete effect using every attribute the have. Haye has never tasted a punch as powerful as a Kltschkos and if he does it’ll be curtains
Americans mad at Haye? Come on now. People got to know who he is before they can get mad at him. The few that do know him are more amused at watching him expose himself for the loud mouth fraud he is. I mean this is the self-proclaimed savior who was going to cleaned out the division, destroy the brothers and take over where Lennox Lewis left off. Besides punking out of 2 fights with the Klitschko’s, he’s beaten the shot, mediocre on his best day Monte Barrett. The slower than a glacier Nicolay Valuev. And the ready for retirement John Ruiz. Audley Harrison is next. Damn. Cleaning out a division sure ain’t what it use to be.
"I ain't gonna lie. I was scared when I first got here. Home of the Damned. Hell on Earth they called it. But the fear was only temporary. I knew the only way for me to survive was for me to just be me. You see I come from a religious, church going family. Who didn't approve of my wicked ways. They washed there hands of me at 12 years old. Called me the devil himself. Now tell me. If the devil can't survive in hell, than who can?"
