Andre Ward vs Sakio Bika Preview

Photo

Those at Showtime must really believe in Andre Ward, because Sakio Bika is no easy night's work for anyone. While not technically sound, he is strong, tough, awkward, determined and he really can whack. They certainly could have gone a lot easier on him since he has little to gain by taking this fight, besides the experience of being in there with a hard-headed pro.

Bika has been woefully inactive lately, but based on what he brings to the table and the fact that he has won rounds against Joe Calzaghe and Lucian Bute, I think he could give Ward his toughest test yet. It's really not all that hard to imagine one of those weird and wild clubs catching him on the temple, is it?

One thing that could make things interesting is the battle for control inside. Ward muscled Allan Green and Mikkel Kessler in close and took them both out of the fight. Bika has always been able to handle himself when it comes to the rough stuff. Perhaps that will convince the undefeated youngster to use his fresh wheels instead, as he did for Edison Miranda. He enjoys a clear edge from the outside, where he can make the most of his speed.

Ward has said that he'll be looking for a knock out. I'm not sure what to make of that. Probably just the fighter's confidence, but if he decides to stand his ground and look for big shots during all the time Bika leaves between punches, he might get it. Anyone can be hurt by a punch they don't see. How eager will he be to stand in the pocket against this guy though?

I'm actually quite intrigued by this fight. The one major concern is that it could be called early, as both fighters have a tendency to come in with their heads down. Keep it above the eyebrows, fellas!

I'll take Ward to escape with his "0" because of his versatility and commitment to winning. He's at the top of his game right now and will be fighting at home once again. It just seems like there are a lot things working against Bika, but don't be surprised if he puts a scare into the kid and the network suits.
