Juan Manuel Marquez vs Michael Katsidis Predictions
A big Saturday of fights continues with the lightweight title clash between champion Juan Manuel Marquez and challenger Michael Katsidis.
How do you see it playing out?
Does the old man still have enough, or will the Aussie brawler be too strong?
Let's take a look around the net at some predictions for the 135lb clash...
The Boxing Bulletin - Juan Manuel Marquez Defends Title Against Michael Katsidis & Father Time
Lee Payton... It took me awhile longer than most, but I've decided to back brains over brawn this time around. The champion is one of the great thinkers of this era, and I'm sure he'll be able to deal with the heavy artillery headed his way. In a battle between two offensive machines, I'm taking the classic model.Marquez TKO 6. Facial damage helps produce another highlight reel KO.
Dave Oakes... There’s no doubt in my mind that this fight will be a war, and both boxers can make valid claims as to why they’ll win, but I’m going with my gut instinct and saying that Katsidis will drag Marquez into the trenches and will finish the stronger to take a close points decision.
Bad Left Hook Fight Preview: Juan Manuel Marquez v. Michael Katsidis
Scott Christ... There isn't a lot to say about this fight, actually. Every boxing fan on earth knows this is a must-see fight, a war on the horizon, a fierce test of endurance, strength and skill awaiting two of the toughest guys in boxing. All that really comes to mind is a quote from the great HBO series "Deadwood," from the incomparable Al Swearengen: "Tell your God to ready for blood." Marquez UD-12
Safe Side Of The Ropes - Is This It? Juan Manuel Marquez vs Michael Katsidis Preview & Prediction
Andrew Harrison... Marquez, as one might expect, has been busting up considerably of late and whilst his whipping shots are just as likely to lacerate and contort the face of his opponent, Katsidis will be hitting with such fury, the possibility exists that the champion could wilt physically rather than mentally.Against the grain, I have a feeling that might well be the case, with a protesting Marquez pulled from the fray by his cornermen late on, after a pulverising contest which will see the lightweight crown change hands.
Tim Starks... I'm not sure which way it will play out. That depends on Katsidis and he's defied expectations before. I do know that more often than not, in bouts where things are more or less even otherwise, I go with the more skilled man. That's Marquez. I'll pick him by knockout, in the 11th, in a bout that could be anywhere from "good" to "omigod did you see that last night?"
The Cruelest Sport - The Art of Violence: Juan Manuel Marquez-Michael Katsidis Preview
Carlos Acevedo... In the end, even a diminished Marquez is probably too much for Katsidis. Eventually, Marquez should be able to apply brushstroke after brushstroke to an onrushing Katsidis, stippling him with jabs, daubing him with bodyshots, and smearing him with hard right uppercuts on his way to a decision or late TKO in a fight whose primary color will be red, naturally.
Inside Fights - Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Michael Katsidis Preview & Picks
Corey Willinger: Here’s two guys who always come to fight and never go quietly. What Katsidis lacks in speed and sharpness he may just make up for with his size and punch resistance. And with Katsidis fighting with the added incentive of honoring his brother, who passed away only a month ago, Marquez is going to have to be at his counter-punching best to turn back his Australian challenger. I see a good two-way action fight gradually turning in Marquez’s favor to the point where Katsidis is outclassed but unfazed. Katsidis will have his moments and bring out the best in Marquez, who will ultimately win a wide but hard-earned decision against the natural lightweight, 117-111.Trent Pusey: A lot of us have been waiting a long time for this fight. Katsidis is tough and won’t go away, but Juan Manuel Marquez is just a better boxer. If age has caught up to the Mexican champion, Katsidis may be able to put just enough pressure on to score the upset. I don’t see that happening, however. Katsidis can get hit and Marquez will be more than happy to oblige. I see Marquez winning by a wide margin, 119-109.
Paul Magno (The Boxing Tribune - preview by Chris Milton)... The only question about this one is whether Marquez has enough left in the tank to deal with a physically strong and determined Katsidis. At prime, Marquez, would pick Katsidis apart and probably stop him before the ninth. Now, it’s not so certain. But I think Marquez is smart enough and has enough left to be able to win fairly comfortably. My pick is Marquez via UD, but with some scary moments in the last 3 rounds.
FIGHTHYPE BREAKDOWN - MARQUEZ-KATSIDIS, FROCH-ABRAHAM, WARD-BIKA AND MORE
Joe DeMaria... I will go with the upset in this one and take a marked up Michael Katsidis, who utilizes a mid-to-late rally to erase any point deficit and win a close, and hotly contested decision. My gut wants to say late stoppage, but Marquez is as savvy as they come... 1 or 2 points will separate them in a split decision Fight of the Year candidate.
BoxingNews24.com - Marquez vs. Katsidis – Analysis and Prediction
Nick Bannister... One day, and maybe one day soon, it will be a fight too far for Marquez, possibly if he goes after one of the new powers at light-welterweight like Bradley or Khan and finds them just too fast. Barring a far more sudden decline than any of the current evidence suggests however, win 52 of Marquez’s great career seems to be the only likely outcome this time around.

Katsidis is going to bring a lot of energy and he’ll get some cracks in, but I don’t see how Marquez misses him. He’s too wide open and commits too much to his shots, that he’s bound to get tagged often and hard. This will be fun while it lasts, but ultimately I think Marquez wins by stoppage.
