Carlos Acevedo of The Cruelest Sport previews Saturday night's welterweight clash between Andre Berto and Carlos Quintana.

Welterweight titleholder Andre Berto returns to the ring on Saturday night when he faces well-traveled Carlos Quintana over 12 rounds at the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida.

Berto will be making his start since returning from aiding earthquake-ravaged Haiti in January and February. After his humdrum performance against Juan Urango last May, Berto spent the rest of the year feuding via cyberspace with NFL star Chad Ochocinco and haggling about his purse for a possible Shane Mosley fight. When Berto withdrew from the Mosely bout to help those suffering in Port-Au Prince, it put the kibosh on his first step up to the big-time. Read the rest here...

Berto over-rated fighter

It’s true Berto has been fighting pretty much journeymen throughout his entire career therefore I consider him an over-rated fighter. I just can’t figure out why HBO is so high on Berto? Who has Berto beaten? Berto needs to fight better opposition if he wants to gain respect being reconized as one of welterweights best fighters.

Berto probably would have already had an 0 on his perfect record if it weren’t for the ref saving him from getting KO’d midway through his fight against Cosme Rivera a couple of years ago. “Chino” had Berto badly hurt.

Then of course Collazo clocked Berto at the start of their memorable fight lucky for Andre the time ran out. In the end Berto got lucky because I like many other FIGHT FANS had the Puerto Rican winning a close fight. I am still anticipating to see a rematch that Collazo sure deserves!

It’s a shame Berto vs Mosley never took place due to the tragedy Hatti encountered because I truly believe Sugar Shane would have made easy work of Berto. It would have been Berto’s toughest challenge ever I just couldn’t see him being able to deal with Mosley’s speed, power, boxing abilities, the experience plus that grantie chin of Shane would have held up against Berto no doubt. Who knows maybe one day we will see Mosley vs Berto it’s never too late.

Moving on to Quintana of course he’s the underdog due to his age I guess that’s 7 years difference than again age should matter just look at Hopkins and what he’s done to younger fighters and what he can continue to do to younger fighters.(Chad Dawson) From what I’ve seen Quintana is looking in top shape plus he’s a southpaw, packs a punch and as I mentioned Berto doesn’t like to get hit. (Cosme Rivera/Luis Collazo)

Remember what “El Indio” did to Paul Williams in their first meeting it could very well happen to Andre Berto that’s why I ain’t counting Carlos Quintana out. All I hope for is that the ref is fair because this fight is taking place in Berto’s hometown of Florida therefore Quintana is going to have to try hard to get that KO. Quintana can’t afford to go the distance he just won’t win the fight that way.

One thing I know for sure is I will be rooting Quintana all night! Viva PUERTO RICO!

Hi LPV,

I agree with you on Mosely-Berto…Mosley might have been too smart for Berto. I also agree re: Rivera….that “my glove is torn” trick was very, umm, fortunate for Berto.

I think Berto has obvious talent, but getting dropped like an anchor by Rivera is a terrible sign. I saw some of Berto’s early fights in New York City and the truth is he’s basically been fighting inutiles from the get, except for Collazo and Collazo had him breezy. If you ask me, Don King cost Collazo that fight, because Collazo’s inactivity (broken by two fights with tomato cans) left him unfit to go to war for 12 rounds. The same might happen to Collazo when he faces Aydin…he’s gone only 6 rounds since the Berto fight….

In the end, HBO made him a “star” first and then tried working backwards to fill in the hype. It’s really weird. This guy has been pretty stinky two of his last three fights, gets booed by his own home crowd, fights hopeless types and they still pay him crazy amounts of money.

Quintana is a good, solid fighter, but I also feel he might be unprepared for a hard 12-rounder given the lack of inactivity he’s had over the last couple of years. This is partly because promoters without an “in” at HBO can’t seem to get their fighters regular work. Quintana has fought 8 rounds in the last 2 1/2 years. He might be gym-ready, but let’s hope he’s fight-ready so we can see a good, competitive bout.
