British Scene: Shinny Bayaar vs Ashley Sexton Preview

Dave Oakes previews Friday's British flyweight title match-up between champion Shinny Bayaar and challenger Ashley Sexton.

Shinny Bayaar makes the first defence of his British flyweight title this Friday; he takes on the unbeaten Ashley Sexton at the Goresbrook Leisure Centre, Dagenham.

The Oldham based Mongolian won the title via a split decision against Chris Edwards late last year. It was a close fight but Bayaar outworked Edwards for the most part and deserved the decision.

Star-divide

Sexton, 9-0 (5KO’s), is coming in off an impressive first round knockout of Usman Ahmed. Ahmed had gone the distance with the aforementioned Edwards and was expected to take Sexton into the later rounds, that wasn’t the case though as Sexton unleashed a vicious overhand right-come-hook that left Ahmed prostrate and unable to beat the count.

Sexton could’ve benefited from a long fight; he’s yet to go past six rounds and will be taking a step into the unknown when he inevitably gets taken into the later rounds by Bayaar. Bayaar, 14-4-1 (4KO’s), has a rock solid chin and I can’t see Sexton stopping him.

This should be a good fight, Bayaar is as tough as they come and doesn’t take a backwards step, whilst Sexton likes to put a show on for the fans and can put together flashy combinations. Sexton seems to thrive on the fans attention and looks to be a fighter who can raise his game in the big fights. I think he’ll enjoy fighting for his first title in front of his home fans.

Bayaar’s southpaw stance may cause Sexton one or two problems early but he should be able to adapt well enough to take control of the fight from the third round onwards. It’ll be interesting to see how Sexton copes as the fight goes on, if his stamina holds up, he should be able to box his way to a comfortable but hard fought points victory.

Olympic bronze medallist David Price continues his education on the undercard. He takes on Daniil Peretyatko over six rounds; Peretyatko has taken John McDermott, Oleg Platov and Derek Chisora the distance and holds wins over Scott Belshaw and Larry Olubamiwo.

Price is unbeaten in five fights but has only boxed eleven rounds, it would be good to for him to get more rounds under his belt. I also hope Peretyatko can provide a good test for him rather than folding early like Price’s last two opponents have.

Two more heavyweight prospects fight on the undercard, the unbeaten Tom Dallas and the abovementioned Olubamiwo. Dallas is looking to take his perfect record to ten wins and faces the experienced Lee Swaby over six rounds.

Olubamiwo, 7-1 (6KO’s), looks to be improving technically but is still very rough around the edges. He is an exciting fighter though and has one punch knockout power. He takes on Colin Kenna over ten rounds but will be looking to finish the job much earlier than that.

Sky has been great for 2010 so far and this has the makings of a great fight, despite what you make of the flyweight division…

I like heavyweight prospect Tom Dallas and I hope Sky actually broadcast his fight tomorrow night… I haven’t seen enough of him to compare him with other British prospects like Chisora, Sexton, Fury and Price.

This has been the most life-affirming thing for me, to know you're valued and then show your resolve to not just curl up and die,
