Predictions & Discussion: Katsidis vs Mitchell - Khan vs Malignaggi - Ortiz vs Campbell

We've got a big Saturday of boxing to look forward to, with 3 significant fights between 135 and 140 on the schedule.

Lightweights Kevin Mitchell and Michael Katsidis start the evening off from London, followed by two junior-welterweight contests in New York featuring Amir Khan vs Paulie Malignaggi and Victor Ortiz vs Nate Campbell.

What do you think of the match-ups?  Which fight are you most interested in?

Do you see the winners as a threat to either Juan Manuel Marquez at 135lb or Timothy Bradley at 140lb?

I love watching Katsidis fight, but I think Mitchell’s the better fighter and I have a feeling the crowd support should give him a boost as well. Mitchell by UD, but a late stoppage is very possible, especially considering Katsidis’ vulnerability to cuts.

Leaning towards Campbell, but he’s the naturally smaller man and he’s getting up their in age. Given his inactivity, it’s also very tough to know how much he’s got left. I wouldn’t be surprised if Ortiz is just too strong and hits too hard… but if Nate is at least 90% of his old self, I think he’ll grind the youngster down.

Malignaggi just doesn’t have the pop to take advantage of Khan’s big weakness, and the better skills belong to the Brit. Khan by a very clear UD.

I don’t know a great deal about Mitchell, so I can’t comment much on what may happen against Katsidis. I do know that Katsidis is ripe for being outboxed though.

I like Nate against Ortiz. I think he has the toughness and defense to get through Victor’s early fire, and the smarts and body attack to take over late. I see Nate perhaps earning a stoppage in the final rounds.

I think Khan beats Malignaggi fairly easily. He’s a longer fighter with better and hand speed and power. Like A.F. said, Paulie doesn’t have the tools to take advantage of Khan’s main weakness.

I agree with Andy about Katsidis v Mitchell, it’s going to be a fantastic fight and it’s feasible that either fighter could win early or late. Both can punch and both like a war, but, I feel Mitchell is the more rounded fighter and might be able to stop a busted up and exhausted Katsidis late. If not, then he’ll take it on points.

I’ve never rated Campbell; he’s never legitimately beaten a top class fighter and always seems to find a way to lose in difficult fights. I can’t see him coping with a young, aggressive, hungry, big punching southpaw like Ortiz, who isn’t without faults himself. I’d be surprised if the fight goes the distance and fancy Ortiz to get the job done inside eight rounds.

Khan will get beaten again as soon as he fights a decent fighter with a half decent punch, unfortunately for Malignaggi, he’s not a decent fighter and can’t punch. Khan is the better fighter in every department apart from his chin, which Malignaggi won’t test.

I can see Khan hitting Malignaggi hard and often, the New Yorker is tough and won’t quit but I think he’ll take a one-sided hammering and either lose a very wide points decision or get stopped late

Tough calls... except one.

It looks to me that Amir Khan should have little trouble tonight against Paulie Malignaggi. The New Yorker has always relied on getting things done from the outside, and against slower fighters who come to him at a steady pace, that’s fine. He can make his quickness and legs work for him like he did with Cotto, N’Dou and Diaz..

But Amir is taller, longer and just as fast, or even faster. He’s also technically superior at range. So how is Malignaggi going to get anything going offensively? He’d better hope the judges are scoring crowd noise. It will prboably go the limit, but I don’t think a stoppage is out of the question at all.

The Campbell-Ortiz fight looks great because there are so many questions to be answered. How will Ortiz react when he gets swatted with a big right hand? Does Nate have 12 good rounds left in him? How will these styles match-up? Will the young man go to war or stay safe all night?

I can’t pin this one down so I’ll go with the younger man based on his athleticism and size. Won’t be surprised if Nate takes him to the dark side.

Khan in a shutout

Mitchell & Nate in two fights that I honestly could go either way on.
