The Boxing Bulletin Pick'em Game - Season 2, Week 1
Welcome to Season 2 of The Boxing Bulletin’s Pick’em game.
Before we get started, congratulations to our top finishers last season.

2. Dave Oakes
3. Dafs
As mentioned last week, the Season 2 game is a little different from the Season 1 version. We think it gives players a little more control, and should make things more interesting. Let’s quickly go over this season’s rules...
1. Players must risk points to win points. Each player starts the season with 0 points. That of course means that players can go into the negatives, but will not be limited in their playing options should that happen.
2. You have the option of passing on any pick rather than risking points.
3. You also have the option of doubling on up to 10 picks over the course of the 10 week season. This will double your risk/reward for any given selection.
4. Simply for participating and risking points on at least one selection, players will receive a bonus of 10 points for playing each week.
5. Any questions – just ask via the comments.
Let’s get to the week 1 line-up…
A. Pick the winner - Rafael Marquez vs Israel Vasquez (Saturday, May 22)
1. Marquez to win – risk 8 points to win 6.
2. Vasquez to win – risk 6 points to win 8.
B. Method of victory – Rafael Maquez vs Israel Vasquez
1. Marquez by stoppage – risk 3.5 to win 5
2. Marquez by decision – risk 1 to win 5
3. Vasquez by stoppage – risk 2.5 to win 5
4. Vasquez by decision – risk 1 to win 5
C. Marquez/Vasquez over/under 8.5 rounds
1. Fight will go over 8.5 rounds – risk 3 points to win 5.
2. Fight will go under 8.5 rounds – risk 5 points to win 3.
D. Pick the winner - Yohnny Perez vs Abner Mares (Saturday, May 22)
1. Perez to win – risk 7 points to win 5.
2. Mares to win – risk 5 points to win 7.
E. Method of Victory – Yohnny Perez vs Abner Mares
1. Perez by stoppage – risk 1.5 to win 5
2. Perez by decision – risk 3.5 to win 5
3. Mares by stoppage – risk 1 to win 5
4. Mares by decision – risk 1.5 to win 5
Please fill out your selections as follows:
Enter the LETTER of the fight first, then whether it’s a double (2) or single (1) followed by the NUMBER of your pick and the NAME of the FIGHTER.
For Selection A, if you want to use one of your doubles on Marquez, you would enter:
A. (2) – 1 – Marquez
For Selection B, if you wanted to use a double on Vasquez by stoppage…
B. (2) – 3 – Vasquez
For Selection B, if you wish to make a pick on Vasquez by decision, without using a double...
B. (1) – 4 – Vasquez
For Selection D, if you wish to pass...
D. Pass
Thanks and good luck, Let’s get Season 2 started!

DARN YOU!
Why couldn’t you take a couple weeks off while I’m out of town? And now that guys like jrok can start from the beginning, I’m sure not to finish in the top 10 this time.

B. (1) 2 – Marquez by decision
C. (1) 1 – Over

Let me see if I got this right
So for Brick considering the picks that he has the max points/min points are
Max: 2*6 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 10 (bonus) = 37
Min : -2*8 – 1 – 3 – 7 + 10 (bonus) = -17
Right?
Lots o’ points gonna be happening in this game if a 50 point swing is possible on a one week

I have a question
Can you double-down more than once per week? (if you have enough unused “doubles” left out of the ten you are given)
For example, could I double on Mares to win and on Mares by stoppage?
Thanks. This sounds like pretty interesting game.

Yes
You can double-down more than once per week, but not more than 10 times over the course of the season. How many doubles each player has left with be included in the standings each week.

That’s brilliant, this is gunna be a gr8 format, and is gunna take a great deal of thought as well

Wow
This must take some time to figure out who wins what points.
I like it, but I doubt im gunna finish as high as the last time.
Anyway down to business.
A 1 – 1 – Marquez to win
B 2 – 1 – Marquez by stoppage
C 1 – 1 – Over 8.5 rounds
D 1 – 1 – Perez to win

Does anyone prefer the Season 1 version?

I’ll reserve judgement until a couple of weeks. Give this a try and see if there are any obvious flaws. The only thing I can see being confusing is how to weight the number of doubles left with the total score. So if a person has 10 more points than another but has 2 less doubles, is the person with more points really in the lead?
by Waldo Rastel on May 18, 2010 6:54 PM EDT up reply actions
I spose you rank the fella with more points in front. because then it’s down the fella with the doubles to use them wisely.

season 1 version ftw.
its a bit confusing

As of now, I like season 1
I found the pick system to be confusing to enter and am unsure of how the point system will work out. I’m guessing it would be difficult for you to keep score. I entered my picks, so lets see how it turns out.
I wasn’t sure how the new format would go over. This game is a little more involved, and it’s understandable that the simpler version might be more appealing. We’ll see how it goes this season… perhaps we might bring back the Season 1 style game if there’s enough demand.

ugh
I clearly intended B to be Marquez by stoppage for double points, not Marquez by decision.

yeah...
I was wondering how come you weren’t top/if it was added up wrong, so I came back to look at your picks. You should get the points IMO, as you put Marquez TKO5 in the preview too. Come on TheBoxingBulletin, give him the points ;)

When tabulating the results, we decided not to penalize SC any points for the mistake, choosing to nullify the selection entirely. It’s tough though to give the points in this situation, as it sets a precedent that could lead to controversy later on.
