Around the Net: Andre Ward vs Allan Green
Showtime's Super-Six World Boxing Classic continues tonight with current favorite Andre Ward taking on tournament newcomer and heavy underdog (of the 5 to 1 variety) Allan Green. There's little doubt that Ward is the better overall fighter, but Green's left hook gives him a puncher's chance. Let's take a look at what the bloggers have to say about the match-up...
Bad Left Hook Fight Preview: Andre Ward v. Allan Green
If Andre Ward loses this fight, it will be because of one of two things: either Andre Ward had an off-night, or Andre Ward got caught with a monster punch. Allan Green, even at his best, is not as good as Andre Ward. I'm sure he's setting out to prove me and everyone else entirely wrong about that, though, and I'm excited to see him in the sort of fight where we'll finally, for the first time in a long time, learn something new about Allan Green. Ward UD-12
The Cruelest Sport: Step Lightly: Andre Ward-Allan Green Preview
Green is not the perfect style matchup for Ward that the European bracket of the Super Six represents, but Ward is still the better boxer of the two. The only question here is whether he can tiptoe around Green long enough to avoid being hurt and possibly stopped by one big punch or flurry. Probably, possibly, maybe not.
The Queensbury Rules: All-American: Andre Ward Vs. Allan Green Preview And Prediction
There are fighters who can beat Ward in this tournament. I don't think Green is the one. But while I think Ward can hurt Green, Green has showed he can survive when he's wobbly, so I think he'll not get knocked out. Give me Ward by a rather one-sided decision where Green flashes moments of danger but can't fully turn those moments into enough danger to amount to anything and instead gets battered. Then Green gets an opponent more suited to him in the third round, when he gets to play spoiler against Kessler. And Ward's job gets harder against the only fighter faster than him in the tournament, his friend Andre Dirrell.
I give Green a very decent puncher’s chance in this one and to support his claim, can hark back to instances where superior boxers completely dismantled their opponents before they caught a big one flush and wound up taking an unscheduled nap. The legendary Tommy Hearns came such a cropper in his 1988 middleweight bout with Iran Barkley, as did Britain’s Herol Graham against Julian Jackson in 1990. Whilst anything is possible, it’s not very probable; it isn’t every day lightning is snagged in a bottle. The form line here suggests that Ward takes his man to school and either lands so much leather he forces a late stoppage or cruises to a straightforward decision win and safe passage to the semis.
The Boxing Tribune: Allan Green Can't Lose
The truth of the matter is that Allan Green does have what it takes to beat any of the other five tournament members. He’s sharp, athletic, and has one-punch, instant game-changing power. The question with him has always been whether he can put it all together and execute when he steps up to that next level.
Fight Insight: Andre Ward vs Allan Green Prediction
Allan Green brings a lot to the table. However, what he will bring to the table against the best fighter that he has ever faced as a pro? The only other name on Green’s resume is Miranda, and it accounts for his only loss. It was later found out that Green was dealing with some undiagnosed medical issues at the time of the Miranda fight, but that loss is not a good omen.
