One More Round with Mark Lyons: Cotto/Foreman, Martirosyan/Greene, Dempsey vs Tyson Simulation
Mark Lyons is back with this week's edition of One More Round.
I'm afraid that I didn't see any boxing last week. I passed on Vitali Klitschko's defense against another no-hoper and while I am intrigued by Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., I chose to order the UFC grudge match instead. That one happened to fizzle in front of a hyped Vegas crowd, but it looked like the better bet for my money ahead of time.
This week I'll be taking a look at the return of Miguel Cotto against Yuri Foreman and the intriguing undercard prospects match-up between Vanes Martirosyan and Joe Greene. I also have another dream fight that was requested by Stan - Jack Dempsey vs Mike Tyson!
As mentioned in the intro, I didn't see Klitschko's fight with Albert Sosnowski, but reading about the bout didn't dispel my notion that Vitali is on the other side of his prime. It's just a question of who can take advantage of the aging big man. I still think David Haye is the man for the job. Only time will tell, but David certainly has a much better chance than anyone Vitali has faced since coming back.
One thing I have to say for Klitschko is that he shows up in great shape and is always completely prepared for battle. His output, size and conditioning are way too much for most of these "challengers" to even compete with. Lets hope the Klitschko and Haye camps can come together and get a meaningful heavyweight fight signed, because more matches against the likes of Sosnowski and Harrison won't do a thing to revitalize interest in the lackluster division.
This weekend's action...
It's fantastic to see fights gravitating back to the stadiums, as affordable prices for real boxing fans can only help the resurgence in popularity the sport has had in the last couple years. That being said, I'm not expecting Saturday night's Yankee Stadium main-event to be competitive.
Miguel Cotto has been going through some difficulties as of late, but Yuri Foreman should be the perfect cure for what ails him. Cotto is a bit caught between styles and I'm not sure he fully believes in himself when a fighter stands up to his best and keeps coming at him. That's when he starts backing off into half boxer - half slugger mode, and it's a style just doesn't suit his skill set.
Daniel Santos tempted fate with one too many long layoffs, and combined with massive weight cutting, had little left to offer in his loss to Foreman. Don't be fooled by that one fight, as Foreman isn't a sharp enough puncher to back Cotto off. Miguel is fully capable of tracking down movers and delivering punishment, and that's all he has to do to win this one comfortably.
The best analogy I can think of for this fight (and Cotto in general as of late) is a Cheetah may lose it's prey and get backed off by a Lion, but when it comes to an Antelope, the Cheetah is still boss. Look for Miguel to beat down this Antelope in convincing fashion. I'm not sure how much Foreman can take, but I'm going with a mid to late round TKO in a one sided thrashing. I don't think Cotto is long for 154 and he will run into a road block sooner rather than later, but it wont be on Saturday night.
On the undercard, there is a very interesting fight between Vanes Martirosyan & Joe Greene that will propel one of the two junior-middleweights into title contention. I have to admit to being a bit of a Greene fan from watching him a few times at the Hard Rock in Florida. I also thought that Vanes lost to Ouma in his last fight. The wild card is the inactivity and low competition level that Joe has faced, and after doing virtually nothing for the last couple years,it's a difficult proposition to gauge how well he'll do in such a big step up in class. I'm going to stick with what I perceive to be a talent edge for Greene and take him to win a clear decision in a nice action fight.
DREAM FIGHT
Jack Dempsey vs Mike Tyson
The stage for this clash that promises to be thrilling and violent for as long as it lasts is a jam packed Yankee Stadium. Tyson (35-0, 31 KOs) at just 22 years of age, enters the bout coming off a one round destruction of Michael Spinks, while the 24 year old Dempsey (60-4, with 11 draws and 47 KOs) has just delivered a thrashing to Jess Willard in three of the most barbaric rounds the sport has ever seen.
In the lead-up to the bout, Tyson has been uncharacteristically complementary of his opponent and Dempsey has responded accordingly. The same can't be said of Don King and Jack Kearns, and if the fight is half as good as the war of words between those two big talkers, we are in for a historic night!
The two fighters have been announced to a frenzied response. Kenny Bayless gives both men their final instructions in the middle of the ring, and it's time to toss leather...
Round One
Surprisingly, the start of the bout sees neither man storm from his corner looking to maybe catch his opponent cold, but after a short feeling out period, Tyson delivers a big right hand that gets Jack's attention. Dempsey fires a right to the body and Mike scores with a scorching hook that buckles Dempsey's legs! Another hook from Iron Mike just before the bell has his supporters going crazy! Jack manages to tie Mike up on the inside as the rounds ends.
Round Two
Looking to capitalize on his big finish to the opening round, Tyson connects with a crushing cross, but Dempsey takes it well and counters with a huge hook! Mike lands a hook and drops a right hand flush on the chin that has Jack suddenly in some trouble! The Manassa Mauler takes a combination to the body, but manages to steady himself enough to fire back with a vicious right hand that stops Tyson's charge for a brief moment. They battle inside and Tyson scores with a short hook, but Dempsey bangs two hard shots to the rib cage and snaps back Tyson's head with an uppercut! Mike scores with his own uppercut and Jack comes back with a hook! They are trading bombs in close, and you can barely hear the bell over the crowd as both men continue to blast away with heavy artillery until the Bayless forges his way between them!
Round Three
Jack drives a hook to the body and slams another to the chin. Tyson didn't like those one bit, and looks to tie up Dempsey's attempted to follow-up. The pulsating action has slowed for a moment. There's a lot of grappling going on in close and very little punching, until Dempsey breaks free and unloads a heavy combo to the body and a crushing hook to the chin that may have hurt Tyson just before the bell! Mike's legs look steady though, and he gives Dempsey a nod before turning back towards his corner.
Round Four
They trade savage shots in the middle of the ring until a blistering right hand from Tyson has Dempsey doing a dance! Mike presses his advantage by ripping a hook to the body, but Dempsey stands his ground and slams a hook back to Mike's head! Iron Mike digs downstairs with a hook and a crosses to the head, and it appears that Jack has some swelling all around his left eye. Dempsey holds on after taking a wicked body shot just before the bell.
Round Five
Sensing he needs to turn the tide, Jack comes out hard and scores with a hook to the body and a combo to the head. Mike eats another hook, but comes back with a scorching cross. The Manassa Mauler is undaunted and unloads a dynamite hook that lands flush on the chin! Dempsey scores with a beautiful 3 punch combo to the head and body! But just when the it looks like Dempsey's got Tyson a little shaky, Iron Mike drills him with a hard right that sends Jack stumbling backward into the ropes! Mike jumps on Dempsey, keeping him pinned to the ropes, before delivering a head snapping uppercut as the bell sounds to end a wild round. The crowd is loving this one!
Round Six
Dempsey's corner feverishly worked on that eye during the break, but it's starting to look a little nasty. So is the in-fighting and Tyson draws a warning for hitting after the break. Mike nods in acknowledgement of the foul, before connecting with a thudding hook to the body. They trade hard right hands in the center of the ring, with both men score well on the inside until Tyson backs Dempsey off with a devastating right hand. Looking to press, Mike charges forward, only for Jack to catch him coming in with a wild upper-cut! The crowd is on it's feet again! Tyson bangs a right to the body, followed by an uppercut and a hook to the head. The fiery combo draws a nod from Dempsey as they stare each other down at the bell!
Round Seven
They trade solid body shots to open the round, before Jack lands a hook to the head. He tries to follow up, but Tyson comes back with a murderous uppercut that rocks Dempsey back on his heels. Mike pushes Dempsey backwards, and pummels him along the ropes, culminating the assault with a punishing right hand on to that nearly closed left eye. Dempsey is trying to roll with these shots along the ropes, but can't get out of the way of another flurry, and a stiff right turns Dempsey's legs to jelly and he is forced to hold on. Tyson breaks free and lands another hard hook just before the bell! Dempsey took some severe punishment during that sequence, and there isn't a spectator in the building not wondering what is keeping Jack on his feet.
Round Eight
Dempsey looks to have his legs as he comes out of his corner, although his vision can't be good at this stage. He takes a hook to the body, but fires back with a dazzling 3 punch combo to the head! Tyson looking a little arm weary from the seventh round assault, but Dempsey can't follow-up as Mike ties him up. They grapple in the clinch, with both men landing hard uppercuts. Tyson rips a hook to the body and two hard rights to the head! Jack's eye is getting uglier by the minute, but he slams a hard right to Tyson's side and an upper-cut to the chin moments before the bell. Tyson nods and taps Dempsey's glove in a show of respect to his struggling, but still determined opponent.
Round Nine
Jack comes out quickly and connects with a hard right hand, but Tyson counters with a short hook that staggers Dempsey. Dempsey's legs look shaky, and Tyson wades into him with both hands and connects with a pulverizing right hand that drives Jack into the corner. The crowd is on it's feet, as Mike rips a hook to the body and snaps Dempsey's head back with an uppercut. Dempsey tries to fire back, but he's in a bad way and a deadly 3 punch combo has him nearly helpless in the corner. Iron Mike scores with several wicked shots in a ferocious flurry, that leaves Kenny Bayless with no choice but to jump in. He wraps his arms around Dempsey, as the fighter slumps slowly to the canvas.
The official time of the stoppage was 2:03 of round nine. The winner by TKO - Iron Mike Tyson!
