Brosch Wins Split Verdict Over Fountain

Andrew Fruman was ringside for this past Saturday night's show at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ontario.

In a rough give and take battle that threatened to boil over at times, Tebor Brosch won an abbreviated split decision over Justin Fountain at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga. The final tallies were 68-66 and 68-65 for Brosch with the dissenting card favouring Fountain by a 67-66 score.

Star-divide

The scheduled ten rounder went to the cards after seven due to a cut directly above Fountain's right eye sustained earlier in the bout after an accidental clash of heads. After letting the fight continue after checking on the injury before the seventh round, the ringside physician recommended the stoppage before the eighth could begin.

It was a tough fight to score with almost every round contested in tooth and nail fashion, though Brosch appeared to land the harder shots while maintaining a little more consistency in his attack. The Mississauga fighter’s main weapon was a right hand that he landed heavily a number of times.

It was the second match-up between the two welterweights with the previous encounter ending in a draw. Though the finer points of ring etiquette were mostly eschewed in favour of roughhouse style tactics, it was an entertaining brawl and another meeting would certainly be welcomed by the fans.

In the main supporting bout, Logan McGuiness made short work of Jorge Banos, dropping the Quebec fighter twice in the opening session.  It was the second victory for McGuinness over Banos, with the Orangeville fighter winning a four round decision last October in Montreal.

A relentless body attack lead to the first knockdown, with a left hook under the elbow dropping Banos in the corner. After hammering home some more shots to the midsection, McGuiness scored another knockdown with a series of ripping uppercuts. Banos gamely managed to get to his feet at the count of seven, but was quickly trapped in a neutral corner under a follow-up barrage, prompting the towel to come flying in.  The official time was 2:17.

Denton Daley moved to 3-0 to start his career with a four round unanimous decision win over Pasteur Mbuyi of Montreal. Scores were 39-37 twice and 39-36 for the local cruiserweight, who dropped his opponent with a combination in the second round.  Daley landed the majority of effective blows - of which there weren't all that many - though was guilty of initiating plenty of clinches in what at times was a very awkward battle.

Welterweight Ryan Wagner also remained perfect as a pro, moving to 2-0 with a stoppage victory over Chris Aucoin. Wagner had little trouble countering his opponent’s charging style, repeatedly landing hard counters between Aucoin’s wild hooks.

Wagner wobbled Aucoin late in the second round with a couple of heavy right hands, and finished the Brantford fighter with another right hand early in the third. After failing to beat the count, Aucoin was helped to his stool where he remained for a couple minutes before eventually leaving the ring under his own power.

In a battle of light-heavyweights, Jonas Pierce won a unanimous decision in his pro debut by scores of 39-37 across the board over Horace Hunter. It was a close fight, with Pierce looking to counter from the outside, seemingly a little perplexed at how to attack Hunter’s southpaw style. Hunter pushed the pace of the bout, landed a number of straight lefts and arguably deserved at least a draw for his efforts.
