The Table Is Set For Juan Manuel Lopez and Rafael Marquez

Michael Nelson takes a look at the next challenge facing Juan Manuel Lopez.

Adding Bernarbe Concepcion to his collection of early round knockout victims, Juan Manuel Lopez properly set the table for his showdown with Rafael Marquez.

Marquez will be a fairly large underdog.

There was some drama in Juanma's 2nd round destruction of Bernarbe when he got caught with a left hook that deposited him on the seat of his pants. But Lopez otherwise overpowered Concepcion and walked through him. His right hook - one of the most dangerous weapons in the sport - landed with frightening accuracy. And while his left hand was often just used as a decoy in previous fights, it's effect was devastating against the overmatched Filipino.

Star-divide

Concepcion, possessing heavy hands and a hard-nosed style, wasn't supposed to be an easy mark. But he dropped his left hand every time he threw his right, leaving him wide open for Lopez' heat-seeking right hook. As it turns out, he was made to order for a man who barely survived against rugged journeyman Rogers Mtwagwa nine months ago.

Lopez has since redeemed himself, and is now viewed as a young beast lurking around the outskirts of pound-for-pound lists. On September 18th, Rafael Marquez will be seen as an ageing Mexican icon walking into a lion's den.

But while the brutal clashes Marquez has had with Israel Vazquez have palpably affected him, he still has a skillset Lopez has never seen before. And the Concepcion left hook that put Lopez down while he was trying to finish off his wounded prey reaffirmed that a potential hall of famer with 35 KOs out of 39 victories likely has the tools to knock him clean out.

Are Rafael's legs, weakened from a career layered with wars, sturdy enough to handle the strong Puerto Rican's onslaught? It's conceivable that he can get blown out the water quicker than Bernarbe did. It's also conceivable that he can evoke memories of a presumably faded Marco Antonio Barerra taking Naseem Hamed to the woodshed.

The table cloth has been set. The dishes and silverware have been arranged. In a little over two months, we find out if Rafael Marquez cements his place among Mexican greats or if young Lopez continues his rise into pound-for-pound lore.

Anythings possible

Nice work Mike!

Your right Marquez does have the skillset that could very well give JuanMa lots of trouble not only the skills but also the experience which in boxing counts for a lot as we’ve seen many times just look at what fighters like Hopkins has done.

Marquez is most def a future hall of famer and no matter what win lose or draw he is already considered a Mexican great. Marquez doesn’t have much to lose it’s actually JuanMa who has more to lose because if he doesn’t beat a worn and torn fighter in Marquez he will go down in the featherweight rankings screwing him up in getting that mega fight against Gamboa a fight which we all want to see.

Mexico vs Puerto Rico is always great for us boxing fanatics therefore let’s just hope this fight take place on Sept 18 without one of these guys getting injuired.

I give JuanMa a better chance at winning just like most boxing fanatics he just has to be more patient. JuanMa can’t afford to make too many mistakes like he did against Mtagawa. JuanMa tends to get overly excited for his fans that sometimes he loses focuse which I believe is what made him look somewhat bad in his war against Mtagwa. If JuanMa takes his time and defenses better I believe he will have no problem beating the greats in his division he just needs to work harder and learn more in the gym he’s still young I sure hope he does because so far he’s looking like the next Felix “Tito” Trinidad.

VIVA PUERTO RICO! VAMOS JuanMa!

I don’t see Marquez been any where near shot. His skills are still there. And he’s smarter than he was before. I think Lopez is in for a rude awakening.

If a man ain't found something worth dying for. He ain't fit to live.

I agree that Marquez has the experience and skills that may make Lopez look foolish out there. It’ll be interesting to see if he still has the legs; I’m still not sure about that.

Either way, it’s a great matchup. Thanks for the comments
