Quick Flurries: Pavlik-Chavez Jr., Maidana-Corley
It looks like Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. might be meeting Kelly Pavlik in December. Bob Arum has reportedly got the okay from both Pavlik, who says he can still make 160lbs, and Chavez Jr.'s trainer Freddie Roach. Considering he'll be facing an opponent that isn't likely to exploit his weaknesses, it's no surprise that Pavlik would be willing to forgo a few meals and stave off the move to super-middleweight just a little bit longer.
AOL Fanhouse - Lem Satterfield... "We gave Kelly Pavlik the option of going to 168 or staying at 160, and he said that he would rather stay at 160," said Arum. "Kelly says that, with a nutritionist, he has no problem making 160 pounds."
That Freddie Roach is willing to match his new pupil up with the former middleweight champion is a little surprising, but he must feel the timing is right. Let's hope it isn't just talk, as this match-up can't fail to deliver some fireworks.
Last week, it was reported that Victor Oritz is likely going to be meeting Vivian Harris on the Mosley/Mora under-card. Hardly exciting news. Now there's word another top junior-welter will also be taking on a soft touch next, with Marcos Maidana - the man that derailed the Ortiz Express last year - reportedly set to face DeMarcus Corley...
Boxing Scene... The Argentine knockout artist Marcos "El Chino" Maidana will defend his interim WBA super lightweight crown against DeMarcus "Chop Chop" Corley of America on Saturday August 28 at Luna Park in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as revealed by the daily sports Olé.
This sort of match-making makes one appreciate the Super-Six just a little bit more. Even if the other elite contenders in the weight class might not be immediately available, it's hard to believe the best opponents that Ortiz and Maidana can find are fighters that clearly haven't been operating on the world class level for some time.
