Quick Flurries: Martinez/Angulo & Bradley/Khan
After watching so many good match-ups fail to get past the negotiations stage, it's hard to get too excited about any potential fights. Still, there's not much else for a fan to do besides hope a few good ones get signed, and there are a couple of recently rumored bouts involving the winners of this past Saturday night's HBO double-header that look awfully good on paper.
Hopefully Paul Williams and Sergio Martinez can agree on a rematch, but a clash between bruising junior-middleweight Alfredo Angulo and the reigning middleweight king is certainly not a bad alternative. After promoter Gary Shaw insisted the potential meeting take place at 154lbs, Martinez has responded favorably...
Boxing Scene - Rick Reeno... "If Paul Williams doesn't step up to the plate, I will fight Angulo at 154-pounds on October 2. Angulo claims he will fight anyone, so we can fight for my former title at super welterweight. We've seen the dog bark, now we'll see if he can bite," Martinez said.
Though Angulo entered the ring against Joachim Alcine weighing 168 pounds, Shaw obviously feels drying out to 154 will be less taxing on the younger Mexican fighter than on the 35 year old Martinez.
For his last bout in the division against Kermit Cintron back in February of 2009, Martinez came in at 164, but was 166 against Paul Williams in December and 167 against Kelly Pavlik in April. Given the difficulties fighters have in drying out as they age, it's fair to wonder just how strong the crafty southpaw's legs will be moving back down in weight.
Martinez-Angulo... or Martinez-Williams... or even Angulo-Williams (wouldn't that be a classic!?) - there are some great fights to be made between 154 and 160. Now let's hope something gets signed.
Timothy Bradley wasn't shy about calling out names after easily handling Luis Abregu this past Saturday night. Bob Arum's made it clear enough the marquee money fight Bradley wants with Manny Pacquiao isn't happening, but Bradley's other targets seem willing, including Amir Khan. The lightning fast British fighter was quick to respond via twitter to Bradley's call-out, and HBO are predictably delighted...
AOL Fan House - Lem Satterfield... Truth to be told, Khan's sentiment was just the thing that HBO's Ross Greenburg was waiting for. "We were waiting on Amir Khan, and he is the one that made the most dramatic statement after the Bradley fight. Tim Bradley has not been shy about wanting to fight the best in the 140-pound division. And Alexander stepped up to the plate and challenged him as well," said Greenburg, HBO's president of sports.
Let's hope Golden Boy is willing to take some risks, as it's hard not to see a Khan/Bradley match-up providing some fireworks. But if not Khan, there's Alexander and Marcos Maidana. Bradley is willing to mix it up and with so many options, it looks like we're going to get rewarded with some nice matches. About time.

Bradley-Khan would be phenomenal
Bradley’s a great fighter, but lacks KO power to put people out and down. Perfect for someone like Khan. The thought of those two throwing shots would be fireworks.
I can’t see anyway it wouldn’t be a very good fight. I do think Bradley’s a sharp enough puncher to hurt Khan, and the reverse is definitely true as well.

Forget El Perro!
I say let’s leave El Perro out of this he doesn’t deserve a shot
I wanna see that rematch between MARAVILLA vs Williams it needs to happen since their first meeting was so close although I had it for Martinez
Hopefully Kirkland gets out of jail soon so we can see him against Angulo which I believe will be El Perro’s toughest challenge ever!
