Around the Net: Friday Night Fights & Shobox Edition

Solid offerings are coming our way tonight from Friday Night Fights and Shobox with some up and comers featured on the telecasts.  A couple of Philadelphia fighters are in action, with Henry Lundy battling Californian John Molina in ESPN's main-event, and Mike Jones headlining the Shobox card against Puerto Rican Irving Garcia.  The Shobox line-up also features upset specialist Antwone Smith, a big favorite this time out, against veteran Lanardo Tyner in a 10 rounder.

Let's take a look at some of the pre-fight buzz from around the net...

The Queensbury Rules - The Rest Of The Week's Boxing Schedule, Featuring Nonito Donaire, Mike Jones, Brian Viloria, Erislandy Lara, John Molina Jr. Vs. Hank Lundy And More...

This figures as a lightweight brawl to some, but from what Lundy's saying, I think he'll eschew his usual engaging style in favor of moving to confuse the flat-footed and more powerful Molina, who was flustered by movement in his only loss to Martin Honorio.

Fightnews - Q&A: John Molina, Jr...

You’re set to face Henry Lundy this Friday, what do you know about him and what are your thoughts on this fight?

I know he’s going to be a tough fight; he’s a champion for a good reason. I know he’s a very athletic fighter; he’s going to try and move around a lot and try to use that athleticism. I’ve prepared myself for a good fight and I think it’s going be a good fight July 9th.

Ringside Report - Henry Lundy Hammers RSR...

What have you seen from John Molina? And specifically, were you able to watch the tape of his loss to Martin Honorio and did you take anything away from that?

Actually I did, and John Molina is one dimensional. In that fight I saw that he can’t deal with a boxer. The key thing is he is real slow and my hand speed and my punching power are going to give him trouble.

Bad Left Hook - TV and Internet Fight Schedule - Weekend of July 9...

Who is Mike Jones? Probably the best American welterweight prospect out there right now. He's no spring chicken, but he has all the tools necessary to be a top fighter, and now that he's getting some support from the networks, his career could go into overdrive. Garcia is probably a step back from Henry Bruseles as an opponent, but he's exciting and it's a fight that will probably end in a knockout.

Philadelphia Inquirer - Philly fighter: 'I'm ready to step up'...

Jones' strengths are obvious: hand speed, take-out power, size. At 6-foot, he's a tall welterweight, but still solid and muscular. He's gaining a reputation for training tenaciously and not dogging it in the ring, finishing opponents off when he's supposed to finish them.

Max Boxing - Antwone Smith is "The Truth"...

In looking at Smith, his style and ring temperament is very similar to another boxer who fights out of the 305, Glen Johnson, another blue-collar fighter who simply puts on his hard hat and gets to the arduous task at hand. There are no frills to what Smith does; he applies steady pressure and slowly breaks you down with a heavy-handed, two-fisted attack. You could call him an athletic grinder.
