Hello, boxing fans! We have a half hour before HBO’s card airs. Any predictions on the light heavyweight championship?

Dawson by 116-112 type scores but I’m pulling for the upset

I’m leaning the same way. I think Pascal will force Dawson to fight, which is good since he’s been boring for the most part of the last few years. Bad Chad might get his shaky chin checked, but his technique is superior to Pascal’s.

The final undercard bout is unimaginably dull and thankfully nearly over. It has been a night short of excitement so far, hopefully the main event bucks that trend. Unfortunately my battery is on its last legs, so I might not be able to participate in the discussion.

Hopefully you get a good main event. I’ll try to hold it down.

Biggest cheers of the night do far have been for Bute when he appeared on the big screen and just now when he was introduced by Buffer.

The crowd is starting to buzz, they have had very little to get excited about so far. Not sure of the attendance, the upper deck is closed off as are the seats at the far end on both sides.

I would say it’s 85% full now as far as the availble seats go

I’m writing for the New Haven Register tonight as well, so I won’t have a chance to comment too much. I have Dawson by a fairly wide decision tonight, due to the reach advantage, and Pascal’s openness as he approaches.

Prediction: 117-11 UD Dawson

by Corey Erdman on Aug 14, 2010 10:29 PM EDT reply actions

I think Pascal will have to floor Dawson to win, even in Montreal.

Michael Buffer is offering his condolences to Jay Larkin. Honorable 10-count in effect.

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 10:45 PM EDT reply actions

Chad Dawson is on his way to the ring to Eminem’s “Not Afraid.”

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 10:46 PM EDT reply actions

Dawson walked alone the entire way.

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 10:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Dawson booed. Fans eager for their fighter.

Canada can put on a show.

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s coming out to a medley, including DJ Khaled’s “All I Do is Win.”

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Pascal’s a live dog, but I think the likely result is Dawson UD. He’s more mobile with a bit more technique.

by Michael Nelson on Aug 14, 2010 10:53 PM EDT reply actions

Technique is definitely key in this fight.

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ll be rooting hard for Pascal though. Love his heart.

Buffer: Let’s get ready to rumble!!! En francais!

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 10:57 PM EDT reply actions

Both fighters have been announced. Referee is Michael Griffin. Griffin gives instructions. They touch gloves.

Round 1

It’s tentative at first, a little nervous energy. Dawson is more on the attack than Pascal. Dawson keepting Pascal at bay with the jab. Pascal is trying to time him, looking for a left hook opening. Pascal is looking off-balance. Dawson looks pretty calm. Pascal lands hard right hand with a minute to go. Dawson in control of the action. Pascal might take it on two hard shots in the round.

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 11:03 PM EDT reply actions

It was a close round. Dawson was dictating, but Pascal landed the telling blows.

10-9 Pascal

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Round 2

Pascal comes out more aggressive than in the first. Dawson still standing his ground and using his jab. Pascal using the ring, sometimes attacking from strange angles. Pascal is finding a home for the straight right. Too much in-and-out by Pascal. Dawson more steady in his approach. Pascal wants to counter and is fairing well. In final 20, Pascal lands some hard rights.

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 11:07 PM EDT reply actions

I’d like to see more action, but Pascal’s power shots won him the first two rounds.

20-18 Pascal

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions

The crowd is errupting anytime anything happens.

Round 3

Pascal grazes Dawson with left hook in first 10 tics. It’s looking more like a chess match right now. Dawson moves like a pawn. Pascal is moving like a knight. Dawson needs to let his left go more. Pascal rips the body halfway through. He’s in-and-out and it’s working. Dawson is not landing power. Pascal moves laterally, throws hard left. He’s keeping Dawson off-balance now. Dawson finally lands a left.

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 11:11 PM EDT reply actions

More of the same from each. I wonder if Pascal will tire or Dawson will be frustrated first.

30-27 Pascal

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 11:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Dawson’s getting throughly outworked. Pascal has faster hand speed than I expected. I wonder when Dawson will make a move…

by RingwalkNIPPON on Aug 14, 2010 11:13 PM EDT reply actions

Round 4

Dawson comes out more active, throws left to body. He’s chasing Pascal around the ring. Pascal looks at home, no pun intended. Dawson triples up on the jab. Pascal not doing much halfway through, lands nice jab. There going jab-for-jab. Dawson’s defense is better this round. Pascal charges in and they clinch. Pascal lands hard right and hell almost broke loose with 10 seconds left.

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 11:15 PM EDT reply actions

I liked Dawson’s work rate that round. I don’t think Pascal stole it away in the last seconds.

39-37 Pascal

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 11:16 PM EDT reply actions

Round 5

Pascal has slowed in his lateral movement slightly. He’s still explosive and dangerous. Dawson’s jab is still working. Dawson pounds Pascal’s body, which is what he needs to do. Pascal is reaching with his shots, but they’re shaking Dawson. Sometimes it’s a right to the body, other times it’s a jab. Pascal is throwing in combination now.

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 11:19 PM EDT reply actions

Pascal takes the fifth.

49-46 Pascal

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 11:19 PM EDT reply actions

Round 6

The two meet at the center, but then the game begins. Pascal gets on his bike. Dawson pumps jabs. Dawson has him in the corner, but for some reason lets him out. Pascal isn’t throwing a lot. Pascal lands a left hook upstairs. Dawson still jabbing to the body and head, gets him in the corner but lets him out. Action has slowed. Dawson doubles and triples. Left hand to head by Dawson. Pascal returns it. Pascal is trying to steal rounds.

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 11:23 PM EDT reply actions

He didn’t steal that one.

58-56 Pascal

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Round 7

I think Dawson feels he’s weathered the power of Pascal. Now he just has to slow him down. He’s moving forward but gets caught with hard right hand. Pascal smells blood. Dawson is hurt, but is walking forward. Dawson puts a combo together and is warned for low blow. Dawson seems to have his wits. Pascal using the ring. He’s winning the round and Dawson isn’t doing anything about it. He’s just jabbing.

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 11:27 PM EDT reply actions

Dawson can’t be content to continue boxing this way. He needs to show he has a fighter’s spirit, if he does.

68-65 Pascal

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Round 8

Dawson seems calm for a guy who seems in trouble. Pascal lands straight left. Dawson lands left hook upstairs. Pascal jabbing, confident to stand in front, hard right to the body. Pascal is now beating Dawson to the punch. Beautiful straight right by Pascal. Dawson appears to be initiating the holding. Dawson looks hurt. He’s slowed drastically this round. Dawson just stands there.

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 11:31 PM EDT reply actions

Is dude awake? Yes, Chad, Jean Pascal can hang with you.

78-74 Pascal

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Dawson’s gonna need a knockout

by Michael Nelson on Aug 14, 2010 11:31 PM EDT reply actions

He’s going to get knocked out.

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Round 9

Pascal comes out like a monster. Dawson was on the ropes. Dawson still goes back to jabbing. His punches don’t have the same zip to them. Pascal is using Dawson’s inactivity to catch a breather himself. Dawson puts a combination together, has Pascal on the ropes and stops punching. I don’t know why, and I bet his corner doesn’t either. They trade rights. Both are jabbing. Pascal will try to steal it again.

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 11:35 PM EDT reply actions

Chad, how are you going to let him off the hook like that? Where’s the urgency?

by RingwalkNIPPON on Aug 14, 2010 11:36 PM EDT reply actions

He has none. It’s crazy.

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 11:37 PM EDT up reply actions

If Teddy Atlas were his trainer, he would have been livid several rounds ago.

by RingwalkNIPPON on Aug 14, 2010 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions

He would’ve left the arena.

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 11:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Dawson might need a knockout, at least a knockdown. He got that one slightly.

87-84 Pascal

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 11:36 PM EDT reply actions

Round 10

Dawson still not changing his approach, which is a mistake. Pascal shoe-shines. It’s more than Dawson is doing. Dawson using his jab as range finder but not following it up with anything. Another lead right by Pascal. He jumps in and gets out. Dawson just isn’t answering Pascal’s attack.

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 11:39 PM EDT reply actions

Dawson has basically quit.

97-93 Pascal

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 11:40 PM EDT up reply actions

It certainly seems that way.

His posture out there is poor and he doesn’t look like he wants it.

Eddie Muhammad Mustafa says this guy’s dead, referring to Pascal. No Mr. Mustafa, it’s your fighter who looks dead out there.

by RingwalkNIPPON on Aug 14, 2010 11:42 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s doing all right this round. Pascal looks tired, but who knows?

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 14, 2010 11:43 PM EDT up reply actions

And again Dawson lets Pascal off the hook.

by RingwalkNIPPON on Aug 14, 2010 11:43 PM EDT reply actions

Round 11

Pascal using the huge ring. Dawson finally lets his hands fly, but Pascal slides away. Dawson has Pascal in trouble on the ropes. Pascal slips away again. Dawson stalks him, triples the jab. If we’re scoring the 11th, Pascal wins 106-103.
