The Boxing Bulletin's Updated Pound 4 Pound List

Manny Pacquiao remains at the top of our rankings/ Photo © Ray Kasprowicz

Though the boxing world hasn't been all that busy since our last P4P list was posted (May 8), there has been enough activity to warrant an update to our top 25 list.

We've also added a couple new writers since then - Corey Erdman & Anthony Wilson - that are voting for the first time.

Our Criteria:

1. Current level of ability

2. Accomplishments over the last 3 years

Let's get to the rankings...

Star-divide

  1. Manny Pacquiao... No change at the top since our last update.  Pacquiao is slated to face Antonio Margarito on November 13, and should keep his spot barring a major surprise.
  2. Floyd Mayweather... Though Money is taking it easy for the rest of the year, his spot is safe.
  3. Juan Manuel Marquez... Dinamita stands in third spot after a dominating win over Juan Diaz.
  4. Sergio Martinez... The middleweight champion will have a chance to justify his high ranking should the rematch with Paul Williams every get finalized.
  5. Paul Williams... Having fought only 4 rounds this year, it will be nice to see Williams get back in there - hopefully against Martinez.
  6. Timothy Bradley... Having got the job done in his welterweight debut, it's time for Desert Storm to take care of business at 140lbs.
  7. Fernando Montiel... The big hitting bantam won't be in Showtime's latest tournament offering, but should have a chance to prove his worth once more against Nonito Donaire sometime in the not too distant future.
  8. Andre Ward... Up next for the current Super-Six favorite is an eventual match-up with friend Andre Dirrell.  Another good performance in that one should see the Oakland fighter climb even higher on our list.
  9. Lucian Bute... The Montreal star might be as talented a fighter as there is in the sport, but he'll need to step up his competition soon to justify his current ranking.
  10. Chad Dawson... We had Dawson at #3 last time out.  That was obviously too high.  This might be too.  We'll see how Bad Chad responds next time out.
  11. Nonito Donaire... Another fighter that needs to step up in competition to validate his ranking.  He should get a chance against Montiel.  Hopefully sooner than later.
  12. Tomasz Adamek... As our ratings are based on current level of ability & accomplishments over the past 3 years, Adamek is still getting credit for his work at cruiserweight.  But as a heavy, it's very hard to justify his P4P credentials.
  13. Jean Pascal... This might be a little high for the new light-heavyweight champ.  He's indicated a willingness to take on all comers - so we should find out soon enough.
  14. Ivan Calderon... The diminutive southpaw faces perhaps his toughest challenge in recent years this Saturday night.  He'll keep his rating with a good win.
  15. Carl Froch... Pascal, Taylor, Dirrell and Froch.  Has anyone faced tougher opposition over the last couple years?  It doesn't get any easier with Arthur Abraham up next.
  16. Wladimir Klitschko... His competition hasn't been great, but the man is dominant.
  17. Celestino Caballero... Can we get this guy a big fight?  Please.
  18. David Haye... As with Adamek, the rating is based on work done below his current division.  He's going to need a good win soon against a relevant heavyweight, or drop from our rankings.
  19. Juan Manuel Lopez... One of the most exciting fighters in the sport will have to wait just a little longer for his next clash.
  20. Mikkel Kessler... The Dane should get by Allan Green to secure a spot in the Super-Six semis.  Perhaps a chance at redemption against Andre Ward awaits.
  21. Rafael Marquez... With a TKO victory in his last outing, Marquez evened the score with rival Israel Vasquez.  It was a convincing win, but the jury is still out on the Mexican sharp shooter since Vasquez appeared a far cry from the brawler of year's past.  We'll know more when he tangles with Juan Manuel Lopez.
  22. Andre Dirrell... He'll have a chance to jump up the list when he eventually meets friend and Super-Six rival Andre Ward.  More importantly, he'll need a win to move into the tournament semi-finals.
  23. Yuriorkis Gamboa... Perhaps we're jumping the gun a little here, but it's hard to argue with the speedy Cuban's talent.
  24. Chris John... John has been getting P4P credit over the last couple years, but he's going to need a more impressive name on his ledger than Rocky Juarez very soon if he's to keep a spot in the top 25.
  25. Arthur Abraham... An epic Super-Six clash with Englishman Carl Froch awaits the steel jawed Abraham.  Depending on other results, he could need a win to advance.

Just Missing The Cut...

Shane Mosley, Bernard Hopkins, Miguel Cotto, Pongsaklek Wonjongkam & Devon Alexander.

Froch in front of Kessler?

I know it was a close fight and that Froch has faced the better opposition, but surely Kessler is in front of Froch, no?

I think it was such a close fight, that what Froch has done over the last couple years overrides Kessler’s head to head edge. Now had Kessler won a legit 9-3 decision, I’d put him in front.
