Gonzalez is back to orthodox to start the second. Now he’s back to southpaw. Benny’s also doesn’t like it when Gonzalez switches up. I have to agree that he’s more effective when he sticks to righty. He’s starting to put a hurt on Marengo. Marengo in big trouble here. Gonzalez now goes back to southpaw… “What in the name of god is he doing switching back to southpaw!?” – The Colonel.

Marengo is fighting back hard, although he’s still not looking too fresh. Heavy shots being landed. Marengo manages to survive the onslaught, and we’re heading to round 3.

Gonzalez back to righty. He’s stalking Marengo to start the 3rd. Gonzalez keeps switching up, which is greatly upsetting Sheridan and Ricardo. Marengo is circling away, while Gonzalez stalks. The Colonel is yelling at Gonzalez to stay right handed. This round has been a lot slower than the frantic 2nd. “Ridiclous!” – The Colonel. “Gonzalez is winning it, but he’s making it difficult. Gonzalez just landed a huge uppercut that dropped Marengo… from the southpaw stance. Margeno is up at 6. He looks very unsteady though. Down he goes. He is struggling to get up. But he’s up. This fight needs to be stopped. Gonzalez just landed another hard uppercut. Marengo now seems to maybe have his feet. No, he doesn’t. But he does force a clinch. Less than 30 seconds left int he round. Marengo has forced another clinch. Marengo is fighting back here. he’s not looking good though. He just ate a couple big shots… another big one just at the bell. Somehow Marengo kept his footing and didn’t go down again.

TheBoxingBulletin.com

We’re in the 6th. The Colonel feels Marengo should not have been allowed to come out for this round. He’s lost every round, he was badly hurt in the 5th. Can’t disagree that letting this go on is kind of pointless. The doctor is going to take a look at Marengo. Blood is pouring from his nose. They are letting this go on. Gonzalez just unloaded with a couple of right hands. Marengo is firing back though. The ref jumps in and stops it. Good move.

FNF round 1

Marlon B. Wright is ref. They meet in the middle. Lundy is the aggressor. Lowther, orthodox, using his jab to head and body, giving angles. Lundy moving forward but not behund anything. They tangle in the corner. Both land a couple, nothing too clean. One minute left. Lowther picking off occasional punches. Lowther’s round.

Lowther 10-9

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 28, 2010 10:24 PM EDT reply actions

FNF round 2

Lowther still using the jab. His right doesn’t look that strong. Lundy still standing in front but not throwing. Lowther, of course, is southpaw. Lundy throws lead left. Miles away. Lowther moving well, confident. Lundy not doing much to try to win rounds, maybe looking for KO. Thirty seconds left. Lowther takes it.

Lowther 20-18

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 28, 2010 10:28 PM EDT reply actions

I missed much of the first round I’m afraid to say. Juan Manuel Lopez is talking with Benny Ricardo at ringside. “You’re going to see a war. I’m going to come right at him. Not going to take a step to the side.”

Not much changing. Lundy still not opening up, just walking in with hands up. Lowther still boxing, not wasting much energy. I’m not sure how cautious he is of Lundy’s power.

Lowther 30-27

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 28, 2010 10:32 PM EDT reply actions

Nothing much happening in round 2. At one stage, Arroyo had Fuentes on the ropes and unloaded with a few heavy shots. Otherwise, it’s mainly Fuentes circling way with Arroyo pushing. Ricardo has been critical of Arroyo for not going to the body at all.

FNF round 4

Lowther trying to pick his spots. He’s not using his feet as much anymore since Lundy isn’t throwing a lot. He’s comfortable near the corners as well as center of the ring. Lowther really doesn’t have a right hand. I’m sure I mistyped earlier. Lowther is southpaw, Lundy is orthodox.

Lowther 40-36

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 28, 2010 10:36 PM EDT reply actions

Ricardo just pointed out that the 24*24 ring is giving Fuentes a lot of room to stay away. We’ll see how that helps Calderon in the main event. Arroyo has now got Fuentes up against the ropes and is going to work. Fuentes seems comfortable enough though right now, although he’s done little offensively himself and is clearly losing. He did just land a decent right though.

FNF round 5

This has basically been a waste of a special Saturday FNF edition. No entertainment at all. Apparently Teddy has a different card with Lundy leading 39-37. When Lundy lets his hands go, he is wide or short. Not a good way to win rounds. He landed power shots to take it, and with such a sorry fight I’ll give it to him.

Lundy looks a little anxious. Maybe he found a place for his power, maybe he thinks he’s down. Lundy is trying to counter more this round. The problem is Lowther is too. So they’re just looking at each other.

It was a body shot that floored Calderon. He went down in the corner. He was down on one knee in the corner, and took the full count.

Calderon’s a tough guy to land clean on upstairs, but Segura chopped him down eventually with the body work.

Benny Ricardo is with Calderon….

“Before anything else, I’d like to give thanks to my fans.” – Calderon

I should mention that Benny is asking the questions in Spanish and translating Calderon’s answers…

“I made the wrong decision with the strategy. I went toe to toe and it was a mistake.”

Thank you for the coverage. Looks like my Pick ’em game standing is going to drop even further! Oh well. the folks who put triples on Segura will be looking good.

Is he waiting for social security to kick in?

UFC

Opening bell. Fifteen seconds in Couture takes him to the ground and is on top pounding away. Toney lying there, Couture on top.

Haha. By “him,” I meant Toney. I guess it’s obvious where my loyalties lie.

UFC

Couture pounding away still. Toney trying to hold on, keep Couture close to him. Couture has Toney on the fence and is striking his face.

UFC

Couture is choking Toney. Toney isn’t very responsive, but is conscious. Toney looks totally out of his element. Couture on top again.

Sounds like the predictable waste of time we expected.

Yes, it does. And it’s very annoying for the fans around me to be so excited and think it’s an MMA victory over boxing. If it was in the ring, different story. It’s that logical.

by Joseph R. Holzer on Aug 28, 2010 11:57 PM EDT up reply actions

In the ring, Toney knocks him out quickly. In the octagon, Couture predictably wins quickly. Either way, it’s meaningless.

Exactly. The only way it means anything is if the “visiting” fighter wins in the opposite sport. Until then, nada.

And...

That’s the extent of my MMA coverage. I wish I watched Segura’s win.

No problem. It was a first-round choke-out. I failed to mention that. There was about a minute left.
