Keeping Pace: Cloud vs Johnson - Why I'm Taking the Old Warrior

by Lee Payton

For more Cloud vs Johnson analysis - check out Michael Nelson's preview: Storm Brewing in St. Louis

I've been watching some of their old fights, and while I usually have a hard time picking forty somethings over fighters who are enjoying their physical prime, I think Glen Johnson has a great shot tonight against Tavoris Cloud.

Fighters not as good as Glen have laid hands on Cloud so it makes sense that a top fighter will have some success as well. I'm not sure what to make of the young guy's chin just yet. How well will he stand up when things get tough in close?

Star-divide

The way Cloud kinda sits in front with the high guard for stretches makes me think the former champ will be able to tag him consistently. The holes are there for jabs, the sneak right hands over the shoulder and a finishing hook.

Given Glen's reputation it's really hard to imagine someone overwhelming him with offense. The man has proven to be as sturdy as they come over the last decade or so.

Cloud should be taking advantage of his young legs in there. For this fight it might not be a bad idea to move laterally and pick the old guy off with quick shots. When he does get trapped inside (likely, IMO) he's got to rip the body hard and hope it slows his man down some.

If he doesn't move and do some serious work on Glen's ribs, I think he'll get pushed hard down the stretch. One of the most exciting things about this one is the possibility that we'll find out what a man has inside him for the first time.

It should be a great fight, no matter who wins. Mr Johnson brings his lunch pail every time out and Mr Cloud, who is much sharper on offense than defense still has the delightful arrogance of a young, undefeated destroyer.

Will old legs hold up tonight? What lessons will the rookie learn?

Gimme the more proven warrior in a gut check. Glen Johnson gets one of his belts back tonight. Perhaps by stoppage.

Payton I agree with most not all SORRY

You are right on everything EXCEPT for your final prediction.

I know it’s tough to pick against Johnson simply because he’s an old back thrower similar to Hopkins another old sckool fighter who we shouldn’t bet against however as you’ve mentioned Johnson’s legs are not there they won’t be there for a much younger fighter.

Yes Johnson has done great for the sport of boxing, many times as we know he’s gotten ROBBED.

I just say in his rematch against Dawson he didn’t look so good he looked old and slow.

Against Yusaf Mack well his opponent I must say didn’t look ready to begin with which is why I agree with Cloud.

I’m not saying Cloud KO’s Johnson but he will simply outbox this veteran into RETIREMENT you will see my friend.

I had the fight a draw

and I’m tired of Johnson getting jobbed. Clearly, Johnson proved that Cloud needs more seasoning and less rust before he faces the top dogs.
