British Scene Weekend Recap: Scrappy Smith Retains Title
Dave Oakes recaps this past Friday's British super-middleweight title match-up between Paul Smith and Tony Dodson.
Paul Smith retained his British super-middleweight belt on Friday night. Once again he struggled to impress in a fight that was scrappy yet captivating.
The first round was uneventful in terms of action but Smith suffered a horrendous cut around his left eye after an accidental head clash. Blood was streaming down the side of the champions face and it looked like a potential fight finisher. Thankfully for Smith, he had one of the best cutsmen in the business in his corner and Mick Williamson worked his magic throughout to keep Smith in the fight.
British Scene: Kell Brook vs Krzysztof Bienias Preview
Dave Oakes previews Friday night's welterweight match-up between Kell Brook and Krzysztof Bienias . Yesterday Dave previewed the other big fight on the show, between Paul Smith and Tony Dodson.
The main support for the Smith v Dodson fight is the eliminator for the WBO welterweight title between Sheffield’s Kell Brook and Poland’s Krzysztof Bienias.
Brook, 20-0 (13 KO’s), is now at the stage of his career where he’s ready leave the ‘hot prospect’ tag behind and should be looking to make inroads at world level. He’s still a few fights away from facing the major players in the division and he must ensure that he’s ready to take the step up to that level when the opportunity arises.
British Scene: Paul Smith vs Tony Dodson Preview
Dave Oakes previews Friday night's British super-middleweight title match-up between champion Paul Smith and challenger Tony Dodson. Check back in tomorrow for Dave's preview of Kell Brook vs Krzysztof Bienias.
The Echo Arena, Liverpool, sees another local derby headlining an action packed card this Friday night. After the success of Tony Dodson v Tony Quigley and Quigley v Paul Smith, we now get to see Smith v Dodson in what will be Smith’s first defence of his British super-middleweight title.
The atmosphere for the previous two derbies held at the Echo was nothing short of electric and this ought to be just as raucous. Smith won the title in unconvincing fashion when he beat Quigley via a contentious split decision last October. Neither fighter impressed on the night, both seemed to struggle under the weight of local expectation, which consequently made for a scrappy and disjointed fight.
