New School Shines, But Nothing New Learned
Michael Nelson assesses the performances of Saturday night's junior-welterweight winners, Amir Khan and Victor Ortiz.
The changing of the guard has been accelerated in 2010.
Within two weeks, two 38 year old warriors in Shane Mosley and Nate Campbell suffered near shut-out defeats. The time when age and experience reigned supreme in pound-for-pound lists and divisional rankings is quickly coming to an end. Now, boxing is scrambling for some young stars.
Much of the star potential is coming out of the 140 pound division. Since Saturday night may have marked the end to Paulie Malignaggi and Nate Campbell as contenders, the top of the class is now owned by fighters in their early-to-mid twenties.
One Sided Night in New York - Khan Stops Malignaggi, Ortiz Shuts Down Campbell
Andrew Fruman recaps Saturday night's HBO 140lb double-header.
It wasn’t a good night for the veterans at Madison Square Garden, as two of the stacked 140lb division’s young guns scored decisive victories over their vastly more experienced counterparts.
Amir Khan was the most impressive performer of the night, smacking Paulie Malignaggi around for ten and a half rounds before Steve Smoger finally stepped in to end the one sided battering. The time was 1:25 of round 11.
Khan was just too quick and accurate, raking the hometown fighter with sharp right hands from start to finish, while winning the battle of the jabs as well. The Magic Man showed spirit, especially early, but never looked a possible winner and at the time of the stoppage, Khan had won every round in convincing fashion.
Nate Campbell vs Victor Ortiz Preview
Michael Nelson previews Saturday's 140lb clash between battling veteran Nate Campbell and big hitting Victor Ortiz.
Perhaps Deja Vu would be a more fitting nickname than The Galaxxy Warrior for veteran pugilist Nate Campbell.
He was the prohibitive underdog against Almazbek Raiymkulov four and a half years ago, written off as old and washed up. Two and a half years after an unrelenting beating of Raiymkulov, he was written off as fodder for the HBO groomed Juan Diaz. A little over two years after spanking young Diaz, he's being viewed as an "opponent" for Victor Ortiz.
If there's one thing clear from this pattern, it's this: counting Nate out is a risky proposition.
