The Last Word--On TCS--Regarding Antonio Margarito

By Carlos Acevedo of The Cruelest Sport.

This will be the last post regarding the Antonio Margarito controversy on The Cruelest Sport. There are a few reasons for this. First, not many are interested in any contextual notions–comprised of historical/economic background–concerning Margarito; second, the holier-than-thou camp is boring, and, with few exceptions, interested only in browbeating; third, reason seems to be in short supply surrounding this issue. In fact, The Cruelest Sport is still accused of being a Margarito "defender" by some without imagination but, apparently, with extraordinarily limited reading comprehension.

Fallout from the Antonio Margarito situation continues and it is probably still worth delving into a few points on the radioactive matter. However, barring any significant developments, this will be the penultimate post on The Cruelest Sport concerning the Margarito controversy. There are some reductive folks out there who might consider these comments a "defense" of Margarito and of the status quo. But they are merely attempts to provide context, something rare in boxing coverage, and to make the simple point that opinions—both informed and uninformed—are not truths. Read the rest here...

A couple of quotes from the new 108lb king...

"If they offer me an opportunity at 112 or 115, I'll definitely go for it."

"If I ever fought one of the Kameda brothers, I'd kill them. They don't have no defense whatsoever. All they have is that little circus, breaking books and chasing chickens, all those weird things. They're just drama, it's all drama.
It’s difficult not to feel it for Messrs. Hershman and the folks over at Showtime after Mikkel Kessler’s sudden and unfortunate departure from their creative Super Six tournament. The half dozen competitors vying for a semi final berth have (once again) rather abruptly become five and will likely, if sense prevails, morph into four. Dumping late entrant Allan Green out of the mixer completely in order to salvage the competition may now be a necessary evil, yet in doing so, the move would more or less make the points scoring malarkey of previous rounds well, pretty much redundant in all honesty (read more).

Now that Antonio Margarito has gotten a license from a vending machine in the lobby of the offices of the Texas Combative Sports Commission, his fight with Manny Pacquiao is officially on. And with the looming bout, apparently, comes a maelstrom of criticism, outrage, and pompous advice sure to last as long as the buildup to the fight itself. Read the rest here...

The Super Six suffered another body shot when Mikkel Kessler was forced to withdraw from the tournament today because of an eye injury.
Antonio Margarito has become the sanctimonious hobby horse of the hour. In a comical hearing not exactly the dramatic equivalent of Jimmy Stewart in Anatomy of A Murder or Gregory Peck in To Kill A Mockingbird, Antonio Margarito, shot down by a 5-1 vote against, was denied a license to fight by the California State Athletic Commission. Insisting that the doctored knucklepad was the sole work of his trainer, the Renfield-like Javier Capitello, Margarito will have to go elsewhere in the United States for a license. Read the rest here...

As we trundle away from the season of shorts, flip flops and rained off barbecues, solace can be found for British fight fans in the recommencement of the domestic boxing schedule and this year it’ll be slightly different. In a pretty significant move, Sky have rejigged their weekend boxing programme, switching fight nights from Friday late to Saturday prime time. British boxing not only has a crack at gaining a wider audience share, it can also shoulder barge its way onto the sports pages of the Sunday broadsheets.
Play at high volume and at least try to get to the trumpet solo, which sounds like Sugar Ray Robinson in action. Click here...

What he told us is that in fact he will be bringing over MMA fighters to fight in a boxing ring. First guy up will be, Kimbo Slice!

The Cruelest Sport P-4-P ratings have been updated for the first time in nearly six months.

A lot has happened since the last ratings were issued, but first I would like to say something about my rankings. The TCS Pound-for-Pound ratings give me, like many mouse potatoes, the opportunity to be oracular and to pretend to have an expertise I do not really possess. In addition, they also help to make sure that what I write about becomes self-referential because whatever happens in boxing affects/is affected by my rankings. Read the rest here...

(Welcome to another edition of Sound & Fury, the boxing column that blackens eyes and skips clichés.
Le Saboteur: Jean Pascal WTD11 Chad Dawson

Le Saboteur: Jean Pascal WTD11 Chad Dawson

By Carlos Acevedo of The Cruelest Sport.

In a startling upset, Jean Pascal outworked talented Chad Dawson at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on his way to a technical decision victory when Dawson was deemed unable to continue due to a cut suffered in the 11th round. Final scores of the abbreviated fight were 108-101, 160-103, and 106-103.

Within a round it became clear that Dawson, now 29-1-0-1 (17), was in for a long night as Pascal alternated between moving on the perimeter and hurling UFOs with abandon while charging. Pascal, Laval, Quebec, via Port-au-Prince, appeared to sweep the first three rounds by using his hit and run tactics to potshot Dawson here and there. His occasional flurries were heightened by the fact that Dawson did little early on but look distressed. Read the rest here...

CHAD DAWSON-JEAN PASCAL PREVIEW

After spending the last two years on the Glen Johnson-Antonio Tarver treadmill, Chad Dawson finally meets a fighter who is not eligible for eldercare when he faces Jean Pascal at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, tomorrow night on HBO.

Both fighters deserve credit for taking the bout. Pascal because he is a gate attraction in Montreal and could have taken lesser fights for significant paydays; and Dawson for hitting the road in pursuit of a big event. Read the rest here...
