Interviews

A Quick Word with Celestino Caballero

Ivan Montiel spoke with Celestino Caballero about the featherweight's recent battle with Jason Litzau, and his plans for the near future.

On his performance against Litzau...

"The problem was I gained too much weight and felt too heavy."

Was he surprised that Litzau took his punches so well...

"Yes, unfortunately I didn't have the same speed while landing those big shots. Otherwise it would have been a different outcome."

On a Litzau rematch...

"I would love a rematch, even it happens at a higher weight class... if not I would like another championship fight at 126. I won't forget Litzau though and I want another fight with him."

Vinny Maddalone Promises Action Against Tomasz Adamek

Corey Erdman had a chance to talk with heavyweight Vinny Maddalone earlier tonight.  The New York fighter takes on Tomasz Adamek at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey in the main-event of Thursday night's Integrated Sports PPV.

Here are a few snippets from the interview.  For the full audio, click here.

On criticisms of his credentials an an opponent for Adamek...

"I can't let it bother me... Listen, all I can tell people is that in the heavyweight division, it only takes one shot.  You land that one punch, it changes everything.  Hasim Rahman knocked out Lennox Lewis.  One shot changes everything..."

What problems can he present for Adamek...

"I'm going to be right in his face.  I'm going to be putting pressure on him.  I'm not the most skilled guy, the most talented guy, but I just want it more than other guy.  The pressure I put on people wears a lot of people down.  That's what I hope happens with this fight..."

Does he see anything in Adamek's style that he can exploit...

"He doesn't stay there.  When he comes in, he looks to close, pot shots, throw three or four punch combinations and get out.  He doesn't want to stay there.  I'm going to try and make him stay there."

Corey Erdman caught up with featheweight Olivier Lontchi earlier this evening.  The Montreal fighter takes on undefeated Mikey Garcia in a 10 rounder on this Saturday's Top Rank PPV.

Here are a couple snippets from the interview.  For the full audio, click on the player below.

On preparing for Garcia...

"Usually I don't watch tapes, but this time I decided to watch two fights to see how the guy fights. His style is very good. He's young and he's coming to win. I'm there to win too and I had a good training camp. I decided to train here. My manager wanted me to to go Las Vegas to train, but there wasn't enough time.  I'm feeling good."

How do you plan on fighting Garcia...

"I have to go inside. I was watching his tapes, and many opponents just run away. I don't want to do that. I'm going to punch him very hard, and make sure he respects my punches."

A Quick Word with Celestino Caballero

Ivan Montiel had a chance to talk to featherweight Celestino Caballero earlier this evening.  The lanky Panamanian takes on Jason Litzau in a 130lb clash Saturday night on HBO.  The quotes are translated from Spanish by Ivan.

On any issues making weight...

"No, not at all.  Training went very well.  I had an excellent camp and didn't have to sacrifice anything.  I'm ready for Saturday."

On his second fight under trainer Jeff Mayweather...

"Jeff has taught me a few new things in the gym, and you can expect to see more from El Pelenchin."

Is he trying to borrow a little of Floyd Mayweather Jr's style...

"That's right.  That's some of what Jeff is trying to teach me."

Should he get by Litzau, who's next?

"I'm willing to fight the champions at 126lbs anytime.  Unfortunately they have not wanted any part of me.  We'll see what happens after Litzau.

His pick for the main-event...

"Great match up.  I'm going with Marquez who has the better discipline.  Both are warriors, but Marquez has much better boxing skills."

Interview with Super-Featherweight Jason Litzau

Corey Erdman had a chance to talk to Jason Litzau earlier this evening.  The super-featherweight from Minnesota, takes on Celestino Caballero this Saturday on HBO.  Click on the player at the bottom for the full audio.

On preparing for a unique fighter like Celestino Caballero?

"My sparring partners are unbelievable.  They're way bigger.  I think Caballero is going to be little compared to some of my sparring partners.  They're 6'1", 147 pounders."

On what we can expect from him on Saturday night...

"You guys are going to see a Jason Litzau like you've never seen before.  I've got a new strength and conditioning coach.  My trainer has come up with a great game plan.  All I can tell you is this will be the best fight of my life.  We've got 10 different game plans.  Whatever he brings to the table, we are going to be there ready to respond.

On working with the new strength and conditionining coach...

I'm stronger.  I'm faster.  I'm making weight easier.... The way Manny Pacquiao's strength and condition coach has changed his career.  This guy is changing my whole career.

On his past losses...

I haven't got any excuses.  I give my all in every fight, and that's all there is to it.  Robert Guerrero beat me.  Jose Hernandez beat me.  That's it... They beat me.  But come November 27, I'm fighting Caballero and I'm going to be at 110% and it's going to be the best Jason Litzau you've seen.  That's all I can tell you.

Any response to Caballero's trash-talk...

Talking doesn't win fights.  He can talk all he wants.  We're fighting.  We're not going to be talking.

Corey Erdman had a chance to talk with Raul Martinez. The super-flyweight takes on Rodrigo Guerrero in an eliminator bout this Saturday on Top Rank Live.

On his title challenge against Nonito Donare last year...

"The main thing I learned is don't go overseas with only a week before the fight.  I didn't get used to the time change.  Other than that, I've been hit harder, but my body didn't adjust... I would love another shot with Donaire here in the United States."

How exciting is the 115lb division right now and who is Martinez looking at fighting...

"Anybody they put in front of me.  I have to take care of business Saturday night, and maybe you can ask me again after that.  Right now I'm going to focus on getting this victory... anybody they put in front of me after that, I'm ready for them."

A Quick Word with Mike Anchondo

Mike Anchondo takes on Freddy Hernandez tonight at 10 PM ET/PT on ShoBox.

Corey Erdman had a chance to talk to former 130lb belt holder Mike Anchondo.  The California fighter continues his comeback against hard hitting welterweight Freddy Hernandez in the main-event of tonight's ShoBox card (10 PM ET/PT).  Click here for the full audio of the interview or scroll down for the audio player link.

For more exclusive interviews related to this weekend's action, check out Jeff Pryor's conversation with Saturday night's PPV headliner, Sergio Mora.

Mike Anchondo on tonight’s fight with Freddy Hernandez…

"I’m just going to go in and do what I do best and that’s box. We’ve got a game plan going into this fight. There are flaws that we see that Freddy has."

"I’m going to expect him to try and knock me out, or try and beat me toe to toe. It’s just something we worked on in the gym. It’s going to go our way. I feel great about this."

On taking time off from the sport…

"I had boxed my whole life. I had been boxing since I was 5 years old. You know, so I kind of took a step back and I wanted to weigh my options and see what was out there in the real world and I didn’t like it. I’m a boxer, I’m a fighter, and that’s what I do. I love doing it."

On how he feels now as a fighter compared to a few years ago…

"I understand what you have to do in the ring in order to win a fight. What you have to do in order to train hard. I understand all that, where as before it was kind of like I was going through the motions. Everything was really unclear. Now things are more clear. I’m more mature now and feel like I’m in my prime now."
