An imaginary stick-up took place in Quebec over the weekend after a middle aged, balaclava wearing former hoodlum reported that he’d been robbed on a business trip by a local man and his gang of accomplices. Closer inspection found that the supposed perpetrator and his crew had been victims themselves, of false accusation and possibly even calumny. Confused? You can bet plenty of others were after they found themselves bleating long and hard about how Bernard Hopkins had been the victim of a hometown heist. (read more)

Pascal Escapes With Draw As Hopkins Shines

Photo

Patrick Connor recaps Saturday night's 175lb title clash.

In previewing and analyzing the clash between Bernard Hopkins and Jean Pascal in the last few weeks, one of the last things anyone expected was a worthwhile fight.

Leave it to Hopkins to surprise us once again.

What most thought would be either a one-sided ode to youth or an ugly tussle wound up an intriguing and at times entertaining bout at the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City last night.

The immortal Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins appeared to win more rounds than he lost in the fight, but visited the canvas twice early, only managing to salvage a majority draw in a fight many felt he won, though the lack of enthusiasm in crying "robbery" perhaps speaks to the old man's inability to entertain and win decisively in recent fights.

By Carlos Acevedo of The Cruelest Sport.

Bernard Hopkins looked down-at-heels for three or four rounds against Jean Pascal last night in Quebec City before taking over for the last two-thirds of the fight, showing the intelligence, professionalism, and technique that his far younger opponent lacked. It was, considering how Hopkins usually performs, a pretty good scrap at the Pepsi Coliseum.

After dropping Hopkins twice in the first three rounds—once with a borderline rabbit punch—Pascal spent the rest of the night filibustering. Unable to figure out what to do with a real pro, Pascal simply did nothing, and let Hopkins, who turned professional in 1988, control the pace and work out openings at his leisure. Letting a fighter like Hopkins take his time, plan, and execute is a serious tactical error. Joe Calzaghe edged Hopkins in 2008 by throwing megatons of leather and forcing Hopkins to react instead of dictate. It certainly was odd seeing a 46 year-old boxer landing lead left hooks to the body from two or three feet away on a fighter young enough to be his son. Read more...

Can Bernard Hopkins Defy The Odds Once Again?

Bernard Hopkins is, in my opinion, the best fighter of the last 15 years. With all due respect to Mr. Pacquiao and Mr. Mayweather, I don't think they are quite as complete a puglisitic package as "The Executioner" has been throughout his often inspirational career. No matter how great the fighter, one can usually point out a weakness, but I have a real hard time finding it when it comes to the Philadelphian fighting legend. I also can't favour any of the great middleweights against him in the ring with confidence. During his prime, he had it all. Now significantly past those days, he's still skilled enough to beat top fighters, or at the very least, make them look ordinary.

All that said, this fight marks the first time I'm picking against the old man. Well, kinda...

Jean Pascal vs Bernard Hopkins Predictions

Boxing's last major North American battle of 2010 takes place tonight on Showtime with Jean Pascal putting his light-heavyweight title on the line against Bernard Hopkins.

The sold-out clash promises to be a nip-and-tuck affair, with the champion's speed matched up against the cagey skills of the almost 46-year-old challenger.  Will youth prevail, or does Hopkins still have enough in the tank to get the job done and once again become the top man at 175lbs?

Let's take a look around the net at predictions for the Quebec City showdown...

Bernard Hopkins, as much a part of the sport’s fixtures and fittings over the past couple of decades as fussy entrance music, bogus trouser tighteners and sequinned shorts, has a chance to sear himself into the record books in Quebec on Saturday evening. Fast approaching 46, the Philadelphian renard has the opportunity to become the oldest winner of a bonafide boxing world title since folk first began punching each other in the face for money under the auspices of the Marquess of Queensberry.
